The Environment Agency has just completed a new slipway and boaters facilities at Allington Lock on the River Medway.

Photos of this can be found by typing in "Allington Slipway" into Google and clicking on the first link (canoe access facilities at Allington)

The slipway is 5 metres wide and is based on the recommended design for inland waterway slipways by the IWA.

Also on site is good car parking for cars and trailers, a new pump out, chemical toilet disposal, electrical hook up, moorings, toilets and showers.

The slipway is an ideal place to explore the non tidal River Medway. If you do intend to visit, it is always best to call the lock keeper ahead on 01622 752864

Have been watching the development just above the tidal lock for some while now and credit to those who managed to get the money spent,not just at Allington,but on all the improvements regards lock and landing stages.From conversations with various members of staff gather that there is still a few more quid to be spent on additional moorings etc before the well runs dry.
The upper Medway can rival anything that the maritime version of the M25( The Thames)can offer with the merciful addition of a bit of peace and quiet into the bargain.
Ps.Best to keep the upper locks unpowered and unmanned,most the Thames lot(with a few notable)exceptions get very uncomfortable if they cannot see a lockie in uniform standing to attention next to a powered lock gate round each and every corner. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifand therefore stay away.

Glad you are appreciating the improvements. We have some further improvements to make this winter namely the replacement of Oak Weir Lock and East Lock upstream and downstream landing stages, and our major project - the refurbishment/ rebuilding of Hampstead Lock. The works will be a vast improvement to the site which will include the installation of access steps within one wall instead of just vertical ladder access.
Just hope the winter is kind to us...

Ladder o laddder....... where art thou ?

O yes ....the wonderful lock from hell. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Assisted an elderly couple trapped in the lock last summer.
Lady was on boat attemping to sort lines and gentleman had opened sluices to empty lock and then shut them again(the before pushing gates open).Leaky top gates were holding lower gates well and truly shut and gentleman needed to get back on boat sharpish as lady had managed to jam rope under cleat etc etc.Boat had been drawn forward away from ladder by rope so no access via ladder to by now well tilted boat.
Your young lithe hero(ME) leaps to the rescue.Suspect this is not an infrequent event.
Nice to see someone on this forum from the Medway branch of the EA and have you seen Teddington Lock rather natty website.Howard, the chap who fettles the site is a frequent contributor to the Thames Forum
