do you store your outboard on the boat?

I'm thinking of doing that so it's always to hand when we want the dinghy. But SWMBO might object if it's left on the cabin floor. Do other forumites ever leave theirs on a pushpit mount with a lock on it in the marina?

When my dinghy outboard is on board it lives in the bottom of the cockpit locker.

I deleted My previous reply as I'd missed the point of yours.

As you're probably aware, many people keep an outboard on the pushpit. One point that is often overlooked is that of adequate security. If you elect to keep yours on view make sure you have a better than average lock and bracket. Your insurers will want to be convinced that you've taken adequate anti-theft precautions. Anything less than this and they'll decline a claim in the event of theft as they will hold you as being negligent.

Sorry about the negativity but I've seen some very poor security over the years.

I have 3 outboards stored on brackets one on each of my pushpit and the third on the aft of the pushpit.

20 hp as backup for main engine, 15hp for large tender and 4hp for small tender.

I wouldn't store an outboard inside, anymore than I would store petrol or gas inside. My outboard lives on a bracket out on the stern, without any security, but where I sail people are generally honest.:D

Ours is on the RIB hanging in the stern davits, it is locked on and we have a security gated marina berth with night security patrols, If expecting rough weather at sea we will lift it via the 'crane' davit onto the pushpit bracket where it is also locked in place if we choose to leave it there. We use steel cable and heavy duty combination locks. The outboard is a 9.9hp with a fitted cover and we prefer accessibility for use. It's fuel tank is disconnected but still resides in the RIB.

Back in our UK days we had a 2hp Honda, kept locked on the pushpit bracket when not in use and left it there year round.

Secondhand Suzuki 2.5 kept on the pushpit with a cover and a bicycle lock. No sign of it being nicked yet and, if it was, it's probably less than the policy excess so I'm not overly concerned.

Mine is on the stern rail & self insured with an Essex Police cover ( thanks Lisa). for a few 100 £s its not worth losing my ncd

I kept outboards (two Seagulls and a Yamaha) on the boat for many years without a qualm, a lock or a problem. The trick, in my opinion, is always to have an outboard which looks significantly less valuable than those on neighbouring boats.

9.8hp stored standing upright in aft locker or on bracket on pushpit. Separate fuel tank so no issue with storing in locker. Fuel tanks live on deck to avoid fumes getting down below

Ancient Suzuki 2 HP lives on a bracket on the pushpit secured with a padlock. The boat is ashore in Greece just now and I not unduly worried about it, otherwise I'd have put it below whilst we're away. In UK, the project boat is just about to acquire a somewhat newer Suzuki 2.5 4 stroke. It too will be secured with a padlock but if anyone were to steal it away, I'd be almost relieved as it would give me the excuse to scrounge round and find a replacement 2 stroke...... No I won't tell you where it is.

I keep a DT2 in the locker - upright. Never had a fumes issues with that - though a new recent fuel tap helped !

I have a seagull on the rail - I do put padlock on it if the scrap metal prices get too high !

Mine lives on the rib which dangles from the davits. OB locked and wired to the rib and "dremmeled" with the O/N conspicuously in various places. Winter at home.
Make sure you have all it's details noted should the 'orrible 'appen

I have an immaculate 2.5hp 2-stroke Suzuki, one of the last ones imported before the RCD silliness and purchased still in its box after only a few hours' use in freshwater. I'm very fond of it and it would be difficult to replace.

There are intermittent outbreaks of outboard theft on the Itchen, with the thieves arriving by water in a stolen boat in order to bypass shoreside security. Our berth is right on the outermost pontoon, so highly visible from the water and not so much from the land.

In view of both these facts, I generally keep the outboard at home in the shed unless I expect to need it.

This does make it easier to give the engine a freshwater flush after each trip, and because it's a 2-stroke I can stroll down the pontoon with it over my shoulder, so transporting it to and fro isn't a big deal.

I store mine virtually upright in an outside locker when we're back in the UK. However, I always drain off the petrol when I leave it so I would have no concerns about storing it inboard if I had to. Before I realised that it would fit in the locker I used to store it on the pushpit with a lock and a very thick PVC rubble sack type of thing tied down over it which is what a lot of boats in the marina seem to do.
