We were using a Lock a few weeks ago with a strong side wind, I informed the wife of the plan to attach the stern line short and tight so I could power the bow round.

On entry there was a large crowd of people gathered with nothing better to do than hope we cocked it up.

SWMBO was quick to shout she had the line but as out of view I shouted " FINGERS OUT "
Perfectly reasonable as I didn't want to power forward with a finger trapped in the rope.
The looks I got from some of the spectator women still gives me nightmares.

'Fingers out' was a nautical term used as you kept a finger on a loaded canon powder trail before removing and igniting the canon, and not meant in the rudest way for women to "get their fingers out ".

Do you find yourself using Nautical terms more frequently than your non boaty friends ?

Well I try and it is good practice IMHO. For example port and starboard have exact meanings but left and right are ambiguous. But I wont use nautical terms with non boaty crew and I certainly would'nt shout 'fingers out' at the SWMBO whilst waiting in a lock. She'd more than likely drop the line and march off below with a curt 'do it yourself then'

Yeh, I know all the terms, for instance when I was in the drivers seat on the upstairs level trying to get the pointy end in the parking place, SWMBO asked if I wanted anything from the kitchen. Its not a kitchen I told her, its a saloon.

I was 'at a loose end' and 'in the doldrums' when someone 'let the cat out of the bag' that you lot were 'three sheets to the wind'. I tried to get to the bar but it was 'chock-a-block and not 'enough room to swing a cat'. I shouted to the guy at the front to get me a beer, giving him the wink 'I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine'. He told me to fek off!! I thought he is 'showing his true colours' And I was starting the feel a little "under the weather' so decided "head for home"

OK, nautical is from the IoM but I understand him OK /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sorry Mick, missed the last post on previous thread.

Got them from Plastimo, think they are designed for up to 12m boat but I just used them to take the sting out of the surge and still left the main warps to take the final uuumph.

MBM to gauge the size...
