I've just fitted another new halyard to dear old Vitality and it occurred to me to ask how other forumites finish off their splicings.

Do you parcel and serve, serve, none of the above, get the boatyard/rigger to do it for you?

No idea what a parcel or serve is ... but I do sort out my own running rigging ... usually just a whip around will sort out what I need! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I just melt the ends of the sysnthetic rope. I use just a bowline in the end to attach the head of the sail. The advantage being that each time I tie a knot it is in a different place so the wear point for the halyard at the mast head pulley and also at the jammer is in a different place making the rope last a lot longer. olewill

Parcel - apply a tight fitting canvas, or similar, sleeve over a line or splice to prevent chaffing.

Serve - Whip

Parcel and Serve - apply a tight fitting canvas, or similar, sleeve over a line or splice to prevent chaffing followed by whipping over the sleeve.

I know I can /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

- on synthetics braid on braid I just serve for halyards. Rule of thumb is if it ain't as hard as a rock when finished then take it off and do it again!

2nd rule of thumb is don't let any whipping impinge upon the pulley/block wheel by fitting a stopping ball made of plastic. I know some purists would say that a small monkey's fist should be used , but I'm not that traditional on my own boat. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

However on a freinds square rigger its a different process - tradition rools OK!

Why doesnt someone in the know produce a quick video "How to Splice" and upload onto youtube???

Would help many people on here..

Thankyou very much ...

I think I'd prefer a nice little mincemeat parcel ... served on a silver plate ... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif once you've done that you can go and parcel and serve all my lines if you wish! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
