Hi everyone!

I am interested if people like to have music or the radio on when on their boat? I always listen to music in the car, so my boat is no different, and I quite enjoy sitting at anchor just chilling out to some music (making sure its not too loud )
Anyone else the same?

Absolutely! I'll have the music going whilst going along, not so much when just sitting at anchor tho...I just like to take in the peaceful surroundings. Depends what mood I'm in tbh.

More so than I do at home. I have a really nice sound that didn't cost a fortune, and it gives me hours of pleasure.

For the saloon I bought a pair of wharfdale diamond bookshelf speakers. In their day they were quite well regarded as a home bookshelf speaker. They are small, so are supplemented by a decent, hidden sub woofer to extend the low frequency response.

Result is a really quite decent stereo image, you really can pinpoint the individual sounds. I like radio dramas too and the imagery is fab.

Waterproof speakers on deck sound pants in comparison, but still probably as good as many have.

4 x 1000 watt amplifiers sounds excessive, but the result is an effortless, clear sound that is a pleasure. And I know if OG turns up, one turn of the dial and I can annoy him. Bonus!

The diamonds were £45 in richer sounds. The biggest bargain in my boat.

The ultimate boat speaker i recon would be Rodgers LS3-5a. Designed by the BBC for their smaller control rooms a pair would be amazing, but they are pricey and also inefficient so you need a properly big amplifier.

Driving down the Thames last year, inner helm, pouring rain...

Ray Gelato through my kicker subs and mb quart components, driven by jbl and hifonics amps.... Niiiiice.

NOT moored up though, please!! :)

Why would anyone want to do something as stupid as that?

I want to hear the waves, the sails & birds. I want to see & hear the dolphins, I want to smell the seaweed & thrift. The last thing I want is to have commercial "music" I could listen to at any time, drowning out the natural world I have gone sailing to be a part of.

The flutter of sails & chuckle of the forefoot tell me how well I am sailing, but even at anchor, the enjoyment includes knowing there are Ospreys or Buzzards or Oyster Catchers etc in the sky or on the beach. The sigh of a breathing dolphin simply has to be heard, why drown it out with muzac you can hear in any shopping mall?

I suspect music is something MoBo'rs do, like underwater lights multi-tone horns, chrome trim & medallions.

Don't be silly sea rush. Do you not have a radio on your boat? Mine doesn't have to be on, but when it is, it's nice, not all distorted. Rest assured it would be off when a dolphin is around. Most of the time there isnt one.
By the same logic, you have a V8 car why not use a push bike?

Yep. fitted a bluetooth radio and now link up the smartphone and play tunes via TuneIn Radio to pick up one of the hundreds of thousands of radio stations worldwide that don't play adverts every 3 minutes or alternatively get a playlist going via one of the Youtube streaming apps e.g. Freedi YT. I've 14GB of 4g data on the EE network so can play music without fear of running out of allowance and with 4g there's never any buffering. all in all, works very well and don't bother taking CD's on the boat anymore + avoid the likes of Wave FM as it's full of adverts, moreso than music play time

We have a nice sound system which we tend to use connected to my iPhone for spotify but really only use it when having our tea and breakfast in the morning. Don't using when at sea as it would need to be so loud we wouldn't be able to hear the VHF which is a big no no.

I do use a pushbike for short journeys. No way I'm starting a V8 (or even the Primera) for a mile down the road to the post box.

I do have a radio on the boat too. It is used for Shipping forecasts - the news of an evening & the odd footy match if the reception is good enough. I can't be bothered with music stations, adverts & idiot DJs. I do have a phone full of mp3 tracks of my own choosing, but very seldom bother playing them - I prefer to read a book or chat to the missus. Wouldn't it be a shame if we all had to be the same?

How do you know dolphins (or any other wildlife) are in the area if you are listening to music?

Just admit it, you're down there with the young uns, 50 cent blasting away in the background, when you pass another boat you're back into "dolphin" mode

:D

The grandchildren know to use their earphones when with me in the boat or car. I don't generally like the car radio on music stations either, as it is only an annoying distraction, altho I do like the afternoon dramas on R4 & I have had comedy tapes in the past. Why should we all be the same?

i cant get our radio to pick up reception :(

Ie even fettled with the Ariel but no joy.
I'd like the radio on the boat as i work in radio, so its kind of a work thing to listen and monitor my stations output but also see what others are up to

Can't see how messing about with your motor cycle will help your radio reception.
