I often wonder about this as well. When I was at Chichester they upgraded the pontoon electrics so you entered a code to turn on your socket. Visitors were powered by the reception's code remotely. You could read off your units from a display on the pontoon when you left and they would be the same when you came back.
They usually charge a visitor inclusive of electricity. MDL do not have meters on the pontoon.
As an MDL berth holder I have a lead with a built in meter which I use when visiting other MDL marinas on a "club outlook" basis. (Free berthing for 30 days as a visitor).
I do have another lead with no meter when I visit other marinas using inclusive charges.

How do they monitor the leccy used by a visitor say on your berth for a week?

with MDL each boat has its own metred shore cable so you pay only for what your boat has used and not a visitor's boat. elsewhere i think its common for shorepower to be lumped in with annual berthing fee and/or overnight fee for visitors - so not really a problem.

Interesting, how do you do it? I've just entered my code and walked away, never knew there was additional functionality.
Sorry, I can't give you exact info, so best ask them in the office. It's something like this though - When you plug in, you have to enter your code and then press #. The display shows "Elec" This means you're connected. If you do the same and press * (I think) this gives you a meter reading, showing units used since last bill. Haven't got a clue how you get it to show the watts being used, so go and sweet talk Heidi.
The billing seems much accurate with the current system. I know for a fact that in years gone by, if you were away for say just a weekend, they did not monitor any meter readings, so both you & the punter paid for leccy used.
Only probem now is, should a visitor berth next to you and for what ever reason unplug your lead, and then plug it back in, your power is cut off.
I seem to remember you could use the * and # with your code. One just gave you the reading and the other toggled between on and off each time you entered the code and the correct * or #. Cant remember which though sorry. You can try both and see if your power goes off onboard.

I take it you cant plug a standard plug in directly i.e. without the meter adaptor?
Guess this must be the case as the visitor who has the leccy included in his overnight stay would need to plug in without a meter. Or maybe they give him a special plug without a meter on it.
I seem to remamber at Premier they were metered? perhaps someone can confirm
Well, I had a day on the boat yesterday and ticked a number of boxes:
I told the marina that I was going and would likely be back in the evening.
Mind you, as I was the only one in the lock it might have been a bit rude not to have had any sort of conversation with the lockie. I probably also mentioned that it wasn't a bad day for the time of year, but maybe a shower of rain later on.
And, I did a MOB exercise, hunting down and retrieving an evian bottle which my youngest threw overboard in Itchenor Reach.
