With the Barclays system, you insert a debit card (issued by Barclays so they know the card number) into the reader. It prompts you for your pin number, then gives you a code. On the website you enter the last 4 numbers of the card you are using, then the code (all when prompted).

Re: Little more info

Hi, a little more info. We have been told today that there will be upto 99 days from the new card being issued before they will cancel our old card. So we have about 3 months to have it forwarded to us here in the Caribbean. They will only post to a UK address. Having had card details cloaned in Trinidad from a website, we welcome any way of making it hard for the conman/thief.

Thanks for explaining that, guys. It does sound like an improvement in security.

So one should ask for (and pay for?) a spare reader? A spill of water or any kind of an accident could render you without access otherwise.

My bank 'Natwest' has been doing this for some time now. It's relatively painless but the security improvements are only there to protect the BANK not you the customer. They have introduced extra steps which improve the security only if YOU follow them and it is up to YOU to keep the extra bits safe.

Having said that I got 2 spare card readers one is safe on land and I have two on the boat (one hidden away) just in case one of these gets wet/dropped overboard ……

The extra card readers were sent by my bank to my home address FOC.

Re: Little more info

A little more info - we called them too and were told that, as we were abroad, they would do the re-issue of new cards immediately, and send the reader right away too. Our existing cards would stop working after 21 days.

The new cards arrived next day at my parents and will be FedExed to us. The reader has yet to arrive so they don't get a perfect 10 on this one.

Can't resist saying that we are currently moored between the Pitons in St Lucia and the neighbouring mooring is taken by the tall ship Tenacious. A truely amazing location, and wifi from the hotel reaches the boat. Perfect......!

Re: Little more info

I'd be very worried if they turned up within days of each other. It's one of the mechanisms banks use to avoid fraud, so they aren't sent to an address being used short term for fraudulent use. Been exposed to some of these measures as I used to sell high cost software to banks, so don't want to tell too many tales, as these fraud prevention measures have their uses, and don't work if everyone blabs about them.

Re: Little more info

Sadly the cynic in me says that Brendan and Temptress are both correct. Although there are already mechanism in place, and new ones are being introduced, they are heavily weighted in the banks' favour. They are trying to make it harder and harder for US to prove that we didn't carry out a transaction. Non-repudiation. Be afraid, be very afraid. Most are not taking a hard line yet but they are positioning themselves to do so.

Real fraud prevention is a fast moving target, with new scams hitting the major banks for millions at a time pretty much weekly. They are continually patching the systems, or more often the processes, to try and plug the leaks, but it is a bit like the story of the Dutch boy and the dyke....

We all need to think very carefully about how these things work and how we can be duped to try and ensure that we don't put ourselves in a position where we can't provide reasonable evidence that a transaction is fraudulent. The day is fast approaching where they won't give us the benefit of the doubt, although they'll deny it if you challenge them as I have.....
