Do you follow these sailing video bloggers - andwhat do you think of them

Delos is more of a 'soap' in that you actually have to get into it and it is about the people and their 'journey'. I prefer the early videos of white spot pirates as they are about preparing a boat for adventure (which interests me), and all of the Yacht Teleport videos as they are about crossing the Northwest Passage, something I have always yearned to do. I think it is each to their own on these things but there are a few out there and sailing related stuff is much preferrable to much of what is on the telly these days.

Checked out Delos.

13 mins of dull video then pixilated thrupp'ney bits.

Swizz, won't be going back.

I think that the interesting thing is that a market in these things is starting to develop. Just because you don't like one of them does not mean that you will dislike all of them.

I also love watching them - seeing people sailing to places I will never see

they are real sailors, doing it on a tight budget

they are generally young and high energy. The girls look great, the men are nice people to look at too.

they occasionally break down and encounter small to large problems - it is good to know what real sailing is like.

I would love to see the chesapeake one day - spend a summer in a small yacht poking around the place.

I probably will never see them at first hand this way but maybe soon some old bloke who sails there and who understand how to fly a camera will make some films and tell me what it is like.

So I am really pleased that a whole new form of reportage has appeared

I am learning a lot from watching these films made by people who are half my age. I learn about them, about where they sail and about the grammar of modern TV. I think it is good of them to hare their sailing lives with other people. Watching is not compulsory.

As a cameraman though - those big boats keep them way too far from the shore.

There are three brand leaders among the video bloggers

These people get hundreds of thousands of hits on each film

they are well made films ... beautiful people, lovely boats and exotic locations

there is no doubt that attractive women help to generate hits

I would be curious to know what British sailors want from a sailing blog.

Here they are

this is white spot pirates - a pretty German woman sailing an aluminium boat she calls Karl

her highest hitting film is this one with 114,000 hits

Patreon

then there is the market leader

three pretty girls who show their breasts on a nice white boat

this is their best hitting film with 2.5 million hits

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO-PFOVST4s

Patreon page

https://www.patreon.com/svdelos?ty=h

then there is La Vagabonde - young aussie couple, very attractive girl, sailing a lovely boat in warm places - lots of swimming

630,000 on their best hitting film

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKm2FX9kKZ4

Then there is Drake paragon

this is his best hitting film

I've watched all of the above and others not mentioned. I suppose it's differcult to pigeon hole why any one of these and others peak ones interest. For me personally it falls into three main areas.

1. To be informed and educated on what ever the subject is.

2. To be entertained .

3. To be informed, educated and entertained .

The three you have listed could loosely blur those edges and that's what the fast forward button is for I suppose.
Then there's yours, somewhat unique, quirky and quintessential British, and for what it's worth the only person I have ever contributed to.
Sex sells, even Vigors blog has more comments when sex is involved . Which I'm sure he is fully aware.

So, you asked. This MOB has said nothing you already didn't know. March to the beat of your own drum Dylan.
Jack a frequent tapper.

More Hands on Deck is pretty entertaining.
I sometimes think I would like to make films of the sailing up here. Then I think about how long it would take to shoot, edit, publish something worth watching. Glad other people can be bothered!

Some years ago I spent many a happy hour at work following the exploits of two old boys in 'Berrimilla' sailing the Sydney Hobart, followed by a trip to the UK via Cape Horn, doing the Fastnet and then immediately sailing back to Sydney to do the S -_H race again. In between times communicated with the International Space Station. Oh and if you like HHGTTG then you should also find it a little amusing too.

Not satisfied with that then decided to sail around the top of North America. Not a bosom in sight as I remember but thrilling none the less. look it up

Never seen any of them, haven't looked at the links yet.
saw a couple of mv delos it comes up on you tube along with yours. never watched a full one yet.
There must be something seriously wrong with me. getting old or something. I am bored by beautiful naked blondes on fancy boats in tropical places.

I find your films interesting because they are relevant to me, within my dreams of reality, I have sailed small low cost boat, I have sailed in some of the areas you visit.
I could see myself doing similar voyages. even though I don't live in the UK.
I even have a vague notion buying a smallish cheep manky old boat of sailing around the UK. or at least some parts west of Scotland, Ireland, interest me because I have sailed the west of Scotland, Ireland because I sailed past without stopping( which was unbelievably stupid)

Perhaps this is why your films are followed mostly by old blokes. you are one and so are we.

these video series are great !! , I am hooked on them , not because they are full of half naked wumin :p , but its the area they are in , the scenery , the clear water , the sunny beaches , the warm water.

oh and as a slight thread drift , you can watch a man take the back of his head off with a gun on youtube , but they don't allow any flashing of breasts , weird place :disgust:

The problem for those actually out sailing or living aboard is bandwidth.
Watching a video takes up too much of our megabytes so we never watch them.
We have not done any videos because uploading them would cause us the same problem. Besides that we cannot afford a video camera.

I make the films for the old blokes - in the back of my head I imagine the spirits of a few thousand old blokes on the boat with me mumbling that I should not do that, or delivering the occasional well done. I know that over half the people who watch are from USA, Canada, NZ and Aus so I am addressing myself to people who do not sail here to some extent - in that case the cryto history normally goes down pretty well. Apologies for the Jacobite farrago and for calling 13th centurey french invaders bastards. I would also like to apologise to Seagull users everywhere.

Buy that crap boat and sail up those rivers

we only go once around the wheel

bandwidth is often a problem - although most marinas now have free wifi with great bandwidth. Making films on board is now fairly easy - a modest camera - £300 and a modest laptop £400 and you can be up and running. The thing that I admire about these people is that they spend many hours making the films and also planning on how to make the story stick together.

The film with Ragamuffin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsJewTrY5v0&feature=youtu.be

is amazing to see - but after 45 seconds the relentless driving rock music and go pro fish eye wears a bit thin

I will never experience such a thing and also know that 5/10/20 hours of flying along at that speed would wear a bit thing.

Sailing with naked breasted girls grinding winches is also something that will never happen and will also make me feel embarassed

Same with Facebook: it's quite OK for people to post videos of murder by beheading but a single female nipple is a breach of their decency standards.

I agree

they are a marvelous bit of escapism

however, at the end of them I do feel slightly unsatsfied - partly because I have not learned much but also because I think that I wasted my youth working for farmers weekly when I should have been sailing.

Dylan, you should hire some eastern european girls or colombian girls to come out on your boat with you and wear small fitting bikinis in choppy weather (even if it is 5c). I think there would be a market for it. You get to attract the older blokes who are only interested in sailing british waters and you get to attract all the younger guys hahaha.

I watch and enjoy La Vagabondes videos. SV Delos I like because the videos are longer and usually show sailing. I also like how they show the maitenance of the boats, and what is going wrong etc. I also find MoreHandsonDeck interesting, as they bought a really rotten boat in La Paz, Mexico for $3,500 and seem to spend all their time fixing it up.

You can get around google ad revenue issue by putting the music on very quietly and having waves/voices over the top so it cant pick it up. La Vagabonde also use the girl, or very unheard of artists with permission - so they can get away with it.

Is Patreon a direct/debit setup? What if they just chose to release 10x30 second clips that were all out of focus?

I'd love to do something like this, whilst working remotely a few hours a day on the laptop with satellite internet. Unfortunately, my sailing needs a lot of improvement for now :)

The patreon thing is weird in that there is no quality control. With the paypal taps blokes pay if they have enjoyed the film - and that helps me a lot to make films they enjoy enough to tap.

I used to use music with permission but google picks them up anyway and snatches all the advertising revenue until you prove to google lawyers that you have signed the contracts to use the music. So if you get 40,000 hits you are argueing with google lawyers over $40 of adsense revenue

damn they are clever people.

As for making the films in a few hours - it takes me a week to make a 25 minute film - structuring, scripting, colour balancing, sound mixing and then making a version that youtube will swallow without turning the fades to soup.

Maybe these people are faster at editing than me than me but I doubt it. So that is a week of sitting at a desk and not sailing.

making good films is much harder than sailing so forget brushing up on your sailing skills - what you need to do is to learn how to hold a camera still in a seaway and tell a story with it

ooh no, I wasn't implying at all that the videos would take a few hours to do. I've edited skiing movies before in the past and know how long it takes to do. I'd earn a lot more from doing consultancy/freelance work than from the videos. Would just use videos as a way of documenting it and keeping friends and family up to date, with the benefit of a little beer money on the side. :)

Why don't you setup an amazon wishlist for your videos and put a hand gimball mount on there. That would certainly help keeping the footage still. There are a few websites where you can get copy right free/royalty free music. Perhaps look on there for inspiration. I always prefer videos without any music tbh. It distracts me.

As a person with a blog and a YouTube channel I find this thread a bit of an eye opener. I was inspired by a certain Dylan Winter (of this parish) and Nathan Whitworth (also seen hereabouts) and by other people who show their thoughts and projects online. I've gained enormous benefit from other people simply sharing what they're doing, and I just wanted to join in and share. As a result, I get a lot of feedback, have made a bunch of friends, and swapped quite a few favours too.

But I'll see what I can do about recruiting some cute female and installing a winch for her to grind, shall I?

I think this is where the future lies
