Do you ever display a motoring cone?

We were delivering a yacht across the Med this year that unbelievably didn't even have a motoring cone on board!

The only option for the crew was to fashion one from whatever equipment they could find - so naturally they used the skippers pants!

I have heard that some people just motor sail without displaying anything at all... That can't be true can it?!?

Pete ;-)

Err... not as often as I should. In fact not very often at all as I usually motor in and out of the Marina/harbour and usually sail when at Sea. The only time I would normally bother (redface) is motoring/motorsailing whilst on a passage.

I don't think I've ever seen a motorsailing cone in use.

Has anyone else seen one being used on a normal cruising boat?

If I see one I take a photo for use in classes. They are virtually never used, therefore they are pointless. Don't bother.

For me the indicator is usually the foresail. Even if the motor is on, and they have a jib, genny etc up I will treat them as a boat sailing.
If it's main only and obviously under motor assistance, I treat them as a mobo.

Oh and of course you can pick holes in the above, so don't bother telling me you had you main up only when you engine failed in a force 6 and blah blah. Common sense is added too, which should be the first rule in the colregs!

Always when more than a couple of minutes motoring under sail, much to the scorn of the crew. Ours has a couple of loops ready for the spinnaker pole uphaul and downhaul, so it just takes a few moments to rig.

After previous unfriendly warnings by Belgian stormtroopers, I put my cone up permanently for the Belge and Dutch bits of last years cruise.
This time they gave me a hard time in Zeebrugge about the name on my transom being unclear or something. The Rosa Klebb lookalike actually unbuttoned the flap on her 9mm automatic before clumping on deck ;)
I still like Belgium though

I've got a cone but have never used it.

I've never seen anyone else using one in the Med either.

I thought about it a couple of times this year when on 48 hour passages but as I had the genoa flying at the same time I just decided that no-one would be able to see it anyway.

Never owned one. Don't recall ever seeing one in Clyde or West Coast Scotland. And don't recall it ever causing any problems.

The only day shapes I have ever seen are on fishing boats - usually steel and permanently welded on. So they are still claiming to be trawling when steaming full speed into harbour.
Hence not convinced these add any value
