Do we 'petrol up' for the winter?

I've seen the post regarding diesel, what's the advice for petrol?

I have a V8 350 MAG petrol currently with just under half a tank of petrol.

The boat is in the water and will remain in over winter suitably equiped with heaters/dehumidifiers etc. We plan to use her regularly over winter as well.

Any recomendations?

Not the same issue with petrol, so you should be OK. Yes the tank will condensate, and you will get a bit of water in the fuel, but this to my knowledge will not create the same problem with the dreaded bug as with diesel. Your issue with petro can be deterioration of the fuel, but just over winter you will not findthis an issue. In any case you will be using much more petrol than an equivalent diesel, so the turnover of fuel is higher.

Empty the tank as the light hydrocarbons in the petrol will evaporate leaving a thicker less volatile mixture. That's the theory which is correct, but in practice don't worry about it. But don't put anymore in the tank until the spring.

Just glug some fresh petrol in the tank at the start of next season.

And a can of Wynnes dry fuel will do no harm, help get any water out the bottom of your tank.

Water in our tank cost us a few weekends to sort, put the dry fuel in and save yourself hassle and weekends to play!

Quicksilver do an additive that all the Merc engineers I've met swear by.

I've used that Quicksilver additive, and AFAIC it's a waste of money. I usually leave my tank approx. 1/4 full and then chuck fresh petrol in at the start of the season. No problems for the past six years, but it's your call/money...

We plan to use her regularly over winter as well.

In that case you just carry on as you are, put fuel in as you need it, we used our V8 year round for 15 years and did exacly nothing different (frost protection apart) than we did in the summer.

Thanks for all the replies and advice it's the first year I have had a boat so I'm still learning as I go!

With all the issues with diesel I just wanted to check what to do with my petrol!
