Do the cabin speakers need to be waterproof?

I'm looking for a radio/CD player to install in the cabin of my 28 foot cruising yacht. Should I pay extra for waterproof speakers or buy cheaper normal ones and replace them if they get damp? Has anyone had this problem? Are there any really superb makes to look out for? Thanks for all advice given

I have a bog standard cd player in my cabin and cheap and cheerful speakers that have been there yonks and work fine. I'm not in damp old Blighty but I doubt you would have a problem. Besides, you can replace ordinary speakers two or three times for the price of the 'marineì ones.
IMHO

these sets r a real option + u get 3 band radio, cassette player, c.d. + remote control.
i still use the original speakers as they r cut into the main bulk hd.

My last boat was a 25 ft yacht. On the basis that it wouldn't last for long, I bought the cheapest car radio/tape player that I could find and cheap speakers that you would fit in a car. The sound quality in the cabin was brilliant and nine years later when I sold the boat it was still working fine. This was on the UK South Coast.

Hi,

There us little to go wrong with speakers and most cones are made from a plastic or composite material. Other than that the frames are normally corrosion resistant on car speakers.

We just in the middle of putting a new stereo and speakers in and I will just get some reasonable car speakers and mount them in a bulkhead to get some reflection for bass.

If its in the cabin I would say no prob. with cheapo car 'speakers. I put a pair from a scrappy in the cockpit and they are OK after two seasons.
Just remember to keep them away from compasses etc!

Replaced mine nearly two years ago now. Old ones were normal "car" ones and had been in for years. I just wanted better sound so I bought quite expensive speakers but they were still only "car" ones and they work great. I also fitted a nice automotive CD/radio and that is brilliant as well.

I still have the same speakers from when the boat was new 24 years ago - during this time I've had to replace the radio/player 3 times. In fact the marine environment is far harder on tape decks and cd players are far more at risk.

The speakers are 3 element Tannoy ribbon speakers (produced for Bush) and the sound coming out of them is still formidable.

They are certainly not waterproof.

Far better to spend money on the best quality speakers you can find, in any case waterproof speakers are awful at reproduction.

I used standard car speakers in my Snapdragon previously ..... lasted the 5 years I had her ...

Present boat has a 29.99 Argos special boom-box that takes batterys or mains .... great thing is the battery comparttment can be wired direct for 12V .... as it has 8 D-cell space !!!

Works a treat .... carry it out on deck, wedge it whereever space ... etc.

Keep away from compasses

That reminds me .... keep floppy disks, music-cassettes, credit cards, mobile phones, etc. etc. away from speakers .... the magnetic driver cores are lethal to 'em !!!!

Another point ...

Most speakers nowadays are in car doors ..... think about the moisture that must get down there when windows are wound up and down .... even with the plastic membranes fitted ....

I believe in cheapest

If you leave the 'memory' side live .... no problem you can go for digital display and tuning ..... but most boats have power totally disconnected when moored up and owner away ..... so I reckon to go for rotary dial older style radios ----- just getting harder to find !! then all your presets are mechanical and saved even with power off etc. etc. They are generally cheaper and less wiring problems .......

If you want extra power .... not normally needed - then a booster can be had for peanuts to go with it with equaliser.

Re: I believe in cheapest

My digital synthesised 3 band car radio, ripped out of a second hand car by a garage holds it’s program settings after battery is switched off / on and doesn’t require a pin code. I think you just have to ‘shop’ around for the right vintage.
Don’t pay too much for one, as garages can't give them away, customers want radios with CD players these days.
