do sailors have better skills than motorboaters

They are also better looking, amazingly intelligent and fantastic lovers I find, not to mention tolerant, patient, humble and modest :o:o:o

Yeah, yeah just keep telling yourself that and one day a tiny bit of it might come true;)

No. Though I do find mobo owners are usually the working class types done good, eg builders or salesmen while raggies are the old money types or surgeons, dentists accountants etc. Complete generalisation though.

I do both and generally find people to be friendly and helpful. There is, IMO, more to sailing than moboing so there are greater skills for the most part and a need to understand a lot more about the water. However, that does not mean that a moboer is necessarily less skilled or less knowledgable. I think there is more potential to cause upset to other water users when travelling at speed and even to cause danger from wakes etc. If you couple that with the large number of mobos and that a proportion of them do lack the necessary knowledge and skills then you end up with a few people getting everyone tarred with the same brush.

I wave at everyone on the water, irrespective of their mode of transport, if they come within range. I find that most people wave back. The same in marinas where a polite 'good morning' is mostly returned. I have had nice chats and shared drinks with strangers from both motorboats and yachts. I have also been 'cut up' by yachts when entering harbours so raggies are not immune. I like to see people enjoying the water whatever way they do it but I also prefer my G&T to remain in the glass and not in my lap! I do often envy those travelling at 30 knots when I am slugging along but then I enjoy sailing and I have a RIB for if I want to go fast.

Very well put and spot on.

Thats odd because I find quite the opposite. Most raggies seem to be estate agents, traffic wardens, call centre operators, tax collectors, bailiffs and drug dealers. Complete generalisation though

Lets get back to the OP shall we.

Sailors dont necessarily have better skills than motorboaters, but for sure they are different skills.

Many sailors are guilty of poor behaviour on the water, as are powerboaters.

Lets call it quits eh......................................

I must buck the trend then, as a humble raggie, I am nothing more than an electrician. Probably not worthy to own a "yacht" but that's not a term I ever personally use to describe my little tub.

Is it just me or do a small minority of sailors feel that they have a God given right to own british waters. Even my friends who occasionally come out with me have the impression that yotties feel superior to motorboat drivers.

Why can't people just accept that sometimes people make mistakes, including sailors,

It appears by some of the comments we are the low of the low and that motorboat production should stop forthwith

I just get so peeved with some of their superior attitude when they are most definitely not.

Lionel

Moboers are self made, drive Audi's, have partners called Sharlene who drinks prosecco and they never look back at the chaos their wake has caused!

Other stereotypes are available.

I think you mean retired estate agents, retired traffic wardens, retired.....

First we all "sail" - just some using canvas, some using propulsion! :)

Both groups have difference skill sets and strengths and weakness in others. One can't generalise.

From my experience there are as many poor yotties out there as moboers.

The only difference is a poor moboer can usually do more damage and upset more people than a yottie can.

Well, here's an example of yachties and motorboats working together in harmony to solve a tricky situation.

The trouble with raggi even mates they are always last to the pub so have free ale then have to go before they buy around ,to catch the next tide

Slight bit of thread drift here but to have a VHF antenna that far away from the vertical must really degrade the performance of the radio. Not what you want if you have to call for assistance.
In fact I have noticed this a lot recently on motorboats where the antenna is position for aesthetic effect rather than for best performance.
We have always kept ours vertical even if it means having to lower it to pass under bridges etc.

We were given a berth in a certain marina that a yachty wanted, had done for ages but they gave it to us. He was next to the berth & used to crash sideways on to our boat with some force every time he came back in, whether this was deliberate or he was just a crap sailor I don't know, but he did come across as a spoilt child at times.
Have met others far more amenable, in all walks of life you get good & bad, it is generally the latter who seem to be lacking in the grey matter dept.
