Do It now, it's later than you think

Re: Do It now, it\'s later than you think

You're right. There are no memorials saying 'he wished he'd spent more time in the office.' Most sincere condolences to your pal.

Re: Do It now, it\'s later than you think

Yup - my philosphy now. After a very good friend of mine dropped dead at the helm of a boat we were bringing round from Bristol to Poole just coming up for two years ago now, my mind has been rather less focuseed on the corporat world and more on doing things while you can. Life is not a rehersal and you are a long time dead!

I'm almost exclusively earning my living from boating now and it's a lot more fun, less stressful and it's great when skippering corporate days and the punters ask you what else you do and I say welcome to my office!!! I had a bunch of senior magers on board early in the year from a major mobiole phone network - the look of envy was a plesaure to see when I said this is my office.

Apart from anything else, you get past a certain age and everybody thinks you're dead from the neck down - well bllx to that!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Do It now, it\'s later than you think

Having major heart surgery helps to focus ones thoughts on the future.

My partner and I now both work for just six months a year. We don't have careers - we take any work we can find for the winter and sail or barge (I accidentally bought a Dutch barge in France last year) for the whole of the summer. With rental revenue from the house and my annual tax rebate and a bit of care we live a charmed and gentle life on the water from 1st May to 31st Oct.

Next summer will be our third year of this and I can tell you, it is blissful.

Re: Do It now, it\'s later than you think

Sorry to hear that Matt. I too was diagnosed with cancer in January - largely as a result of being a professional beach-bum whilst on holidays. Had the damn thing removed - seems all OK now. Just need check-ups every 3 months for the next 5 years.

Still Mr Corporate for the moment, as the boxes & wires company keeps me busy and I've got 3 kids (who you met on D2) to get through education. Still - it pays for the good times!

Somewhat similar situation myself. Don't regret selling the business and only working for the winter. Once you comprehend and understand, the loss of status issues, its great. A close relative is very ill with cancer, 67 y.o. You can't take it with you, and you never know when he'll come knocking. Life is for living, enjoy!

Re: Works both ways

I kicked corporate life into touch a few years ago - became a gentleman of leisure, sailing when and where I wanted and after a year I was bored to tears.

Found life completely frustrating. Worse still had a heart attack (on the boat) which did'nt help much, neither did docs advice to avoid stress. After 2nd heart attack I decided a bit of stress was'nt a bad thing and started up on my own.

Now working harder than ever and feel much better for it

Probably I'm just an awkward sod.

Re: Do It now, it\'s later than you think

Good luck for the next few years Dave. I also had an op. 4yrs 11months ago, on my larynx, and have got one more check-up to go to.
After feeling sorry for myself for a year I've been involved in buying 2 new boats and am now doing more boating than ever. In fact I'm off down to Devon again for a week, on Monday, by myself - it's safe now as hlb is back "oop north".
I've had a couple of scares during the period and currently am not allowed to drive but thankfully the "problems" have all mysteriously healed themselves/disappeared in time.
I also don't miss work one little bit except when the weather is bad and I can't get outside.
You are indeed, as someone has said earlier, a long time dead.
