There are several sides to the question.
Seamanship comes with experience and intelligence
Sailing the boat can be taught to anyone but dinghy sailors have an advantage, especially if they have raced
Handling a boat at close quarters needs boat handling skills and spatial awareness that some people never get. I know a sailor who has crossed oceans but is a menace in a marina.

That whole video is absolutely unbelievable, and the actions of those first two Melges are indefensible on any level.

IMHO, the secretary of the International Optimist Association isn't one to let things like this drop.

That whole video is absolutely unbelievable, and the actions of those first two Melges are indefensible on any level.

I could not believe what I just saw on that video!! Any seaman worth their salt would have seen that the oppys where rounding the buoy there and aimed a bit further down wind so they didnt get fouled up....by not mixing it with oppys they would have kept their speed up too!

Shocking I hope the protests where made loud and clear to the race comitee!

On a different note, what a fantastic backdrop to sail and race in!!
