Do boats leave the Med?

Looking into French canals, going north, but everything is about going south. What happens to all the boats which get to the Med via the canals. Do they ever go back north again?

Going north through the main system is hard work, particularly the lower reaches going against the spring/summer current on the Rhone. Canal du Midi is easier but draft even more limited. That is the way we planned to bring our boat back so bought the shallow (1.4m) version of the Bavaria 37. In the event it was not possible because of a change in circumstances so sailed (well motored mostly!) from Corfu to San Carles then truck to Poole.
