DJI Osmo Pocket

My Osmo pocket should arrive today. Was reading some threads on the DJI Forum and I am amazed that the Osmo pocket does NOT come with the normal micro USB connector used for many Android Phones. I am lucky as I have an iPhone. I think the other adapter it comes with is the USB C one on newer android phones...… You can buy a USB C to micro USB adapter but not sure if this will work and it will make it very wobbly to hold. You could still however do the initial set up etc with this adapter and then just use the Osmo pocket without the phone attached which is how I intend to use it

various adapters here

Ah - I'm sure lots of people will fall into this trap.
As I understand it, USB C is NOT just a different connector.
It can do loads of other new stuff - very quickly.
I suspect that DJI have used it on the Osmo Pocked to do just that - connect quickly and seamlessly with the phone.

BTW
Did you know that the guy who invented the USB interface died the other day.
............ they had to bury him the other way up!!

Look what arrived...… Charging it now to set it up

First impressions are it is very small actually so small it is a little difficult to hold.

Firmware updated ok and it seems easy to operate..... Beware not to get the language set to Chinese...… I did and it was fun getting it back...……. Found a how to on the DJI Forum

I've been told to wait for Xmas for mine :(:(:(

BTW
I'm not sure if this is the correct method using imgbb but this procedure works
Go to the pic in imgbb
Right click the image and get its actual address (in Chrome that would be "Copy image address")
Paste the actual link into your post.
Then add [img] to the beginning of the actual link
And [/img] to the end of the actual link

Also make sure that any or haven't crept into the link.

You should end up with this:

Which produces this

Many thanks for that. If you search around the house as I used to when I was a boy you might be able to find your present..... :)

Also tell here indoors that it would be wise to set it all up before Christmas so you can film some of the Christmas activities on it

I was going to write a grinch-like post questioning the point of any of this videography stuff - the point of which I do not at all get - but, as people clearly enjoy it, I will just say...

Merry Christmas, one and all.

Have you not watched any of the excellent videos some have posted in the forum...…………….. Also it is just a hobby/pastime like anything else.

First video I made just minutes after setting up the Osmo Pocket...…. I am quite impressed especially how portable and quick to use it is

From that video, it looks like the downside of this could be wind noise. That looked like a completely still day yet there were a couple of rumbles of it. Would be very interested to hear of experiences with this as tempted to get one for using on the boat, but excessive wind noise would make it useless.

Any new feedback from those of you who already have the Osmo Pocket?

Hurricane, how does it compare to a smartphone on a gimbal?

Jury is still out.

Cons
I am disappointed with its connection to the smart phone.
And there are a lot of extra features that are only available when it is connected to a smart phone.
It is very wobbly when connected to my Samsung S8.
IMO, on its own, it has limited use as it is difficult to frame a shot.
The screen is so small that it is difficult to see what you are shooting.
It seems easy to capture a shot by moving left and right but up and down requires a gesture on the small screen which is very fiddly.

Pros
The gimbal seems to work well,
It is very quick to get out of your pocket and get shooting.
Compared with a smartphone on a gimbal you could have "got that shot" and put it back in your pocket long before setting up a smartphone on its gimbal.
But probably not any quicker than shooting with just a modern non gimbaled smartphone (and phones like the S8 have stabilisation built in)
Video and sound quality is good.

I haven't given up on it.
I bought a short male USBC/male USBC wire - In a hope that I could plug the phone into the bottom of the Osmo Pocket - it didn't work.
I could get a male/female version and connect it to the removable plug in the middle of the Osmo Pocket but I have decided that would be ugly and inconvenient.
It is still early days in the supply of addons.
I have ordered the expansion kit.
Importantly, the expansion kit includes a wireless adaptor which might make the connection to a smartphone more useable.
The kit also includes a thumb wheel which I believe should make the pitch (up/down) easier to operate.

That all said, I had it in my pocket on New Years Eve.
After dinner we went to the local firework display - only about 5 mins long.
Half way through the display, I remembered that I had the Osmo in my pocket.
Seconds later, I was filming.
In that respect it is brilliant.

Here is a 40 seconds long clip.
Please don't think this clip as an example of the Osmo's ability.
It was just playing with it and a little fun edit after.
In fact, I was showing off some of KDENLive's post editing features.
And remember it was in my pocket during most of the firework display but it is the only clip that I have to show you at the moment.
Half way through this clip there is a panorama photo that I took whilst we were having dinner when I was showing off the Osmo.
During that shot, I was explaining how it can do panoramas just with a single click and holding in the hand.

As I say, the jury is still out so I'll report more later.

Thanks, appreciate the detailed answer.

I've been using my Samsung S5 on a gimbal but it is a bit of a fad to set up if you want a quick shot of something and of course much more obvious to others around you. I'm in the USA next week and could probably save myself £50-£60 but I think it may be a situation to wait for an Osmo Pocket ver. 2.
