I want to upgrade guardrail with some proper swaged eyes and swaged on pelican connections etc...Had a rather expensive quote..wondered if its possible to buy cheapish swaging tool or hire one somehwere. Any leads on this? I saw one tool for £130...

I seem to remember fittings that included a cone & nuts that allowed fittings just like the swaged ones to be bolted onto s/s wire. Do these still exist I wonder?

Added later; There you go, Norseman & Stalock, I knew someone would remember them!

Better to use Norseman or Stalock terminals for a DIY job, and possible to undo again later on should you ever need to.

IIRC an old PBO article found they were stronger than crimped ferrules on test, and swaged terminals were strongest.

Make sure you get the right cones for the kind of wire you intend to use.

As mainmarine has said. There are various tools available.
The cheepest is the Ormiston bolt together one.

I have a better and much more expensive manual one which will do up to 6mm but even 4mm is quite hard work.

I have fitted quite a few yachts with new guardrails normally do them in situ and this does away with several fastenings. At the aft end I always use about 3" of binding cord such that it can always be cut in an emergency.

I have done my own guardrails using them. The ferules work quite well and are quite cost effective. I got the stainless pelican things from ebay and I already had the coated wire and various sizes of ferules.

The ferules are relatively innexpensive and available from several sources.

I can email photos or post them here if the rain stays off for long enough.

I'd be interested in your 'more expensive' swaging tool. Can you send manufacturer details. Nicropress do one which would cost about £130...if there is something cheaper that would the job on 5mm wire that would be ideal! Thanks for the ebay tipo about pelican thingies
