Ive just been thumbing through the new MBM during my lunch hour. Has anyone read about the superyacht built from a prototype hull about 85ft long? It is kept near Burnham on Crouch, and I have been cruising past it for the last year or so wondering about its origins. I hadnt appreciated the owner brought it down from the Clyde as a bare hull in the early 90's with just two 125hp outboards strapped to the transom and a temporary wheelshelter!!!

Have just read the article, would have been far more interesting had it been a bit more in depth rather talk talk about fish tanks and how it was changed from the original plans for a dive boat.

The wiring in the engine room looks like a real nightmare, surprised any insurance company would want to cover it, but then maybe it's not insured.

But what a project to complete, certainly from the outside it looks magnificent. Would be interested to know how she handles, what sort of speeds she does etc etc.

When I first glanced at the article I thought it was going to be really interesting, but it wasn't.

I agree, i was fascinated at first by the article and my quick flick through the mag was stopped as i read it. But have to say was disappointed in the article. Bearing in mind the scale of the task in hand, and some of the major obstacles the home build guy must have had - i would have thought that another couple of pages with more info and detail would have been a good idea?

That said - the guy has my total admiration, (1) for having the balls to do it (2) for not caring enough about his neighbours to build a space shuttle in his garden and (3) bringing the hull back from the north with 2 x outboards and a dozen or so fuel drums!

All IMHO of course!

Cheers,

C

I would have given him a tow down ! Would have saved a lot with diesel ?

Anyhow he seems like a really nice guy ! Why dont we organise a meet on his boat ? ( Pay him for the use ?)

I am happy to organise if there are any takers ?

The boat was finished at Benfleet Yacht Club, opposite the train station. I used to look at it every day on the way to work and never thought it would be completed. One of those boat yard projects that just site there. The owner has my compete admiration for finishing it.

Amazingly it is now moored at Essex Marina opposite my Hunter Sonata! I have never seen it move from it's mooring so not sure how it goes.

I must say I also was fascinated by the article having taken on many "projects" myself I know how hard it is to keep going till the end. I would not like to fault find in the engine compartment tho that wiring looked a nightmare!!

I just want to know how the hell he found the time to do it! Whenever I try and get to the boat her indoors finds me something to do around the house! God it would have taken me a lifetime to complete it!
