I have a cruising chute but I would like to use it with a snuffer.

It doesn't look too hard to make one, BUT I'm unsure of what material - I am assuming I need something lightweight and had considered buying a couple of old useless dinghy sails from ebay.

Then I had another idea, an old spinnaker possibly a ripped one might be a better bet. Do any of you guys out there have something suitable that you would part with for minimal cost, or do you have a better idea?

They're made of spinnaker fabric usually - I'd expect normal sailcloth to be too stiff and heavy. Plus a dinghy sail won't have any part long enough for the full height, so you'd need to do a lot of sewing bits together for a rather patchwork result. Go for the surplus (possibly ripped) spinnaker.

A B&Q orange bucket would probably do nicely for the rigid bit round the mouth :)

I have a snuffer I no longer use. The luff is about 36 foot, its basically in very good condition, and complete with swivels and pulley lines, except that the plastic buckety thing at the bottom has a crack in it.

Rip stop fabric can be bought quite cheaply in fabric clearance stores or from point north (google them).
I saw a design, probably in PBO for a snuffer that used two ikea waste bins which are clear plastic. They both had the bottoms cut out and were then slid inside one another sandwiching the tube of fabric.

Ooh! Ooh!

Buy a washing up bowl & cut the bottom out of it to repair it. Or send it to me & I'll fix it & use it!

Rather than use a bucket you can make a loop out of some stiff rigging wire and sew it into the bottom of the snuffer. My snuffer is made like this and works well.

Idea is that it is kinder on the rolled genoa if it hits it on way down or up, the bucket type tend to split and can damage the spinnaker or the genoa. Also if you wack yourself on the head with it. its not so bad as a bucket type.

I think the mouth of mine was a loop of SS tube?
I suspect a loop of plastic 22mm plumbing pipe would work well.
Lots of ripstop on eBay.
