DIY sailmaking: total waste of time, or a worthwhile fascinating skill?

I did look into this sometime ago, the main problem is finding space to do it.

You can actually design your sail quite easily using this free software: http://www.sailcut.com/ this provides patterns to cut the material accurately, you need to find a way to transfer the pattern onto the material, I was thinking of plotting it on an A0 plotter.

There are dozens of videos on the sailrite website which shows how to put their kits together, they give lots of advice which is not exclusive to their products.

I really think a proper sailmaking sewing machine is the key, I have tried with a heavy duty domestic singer sewing machine and the main problem with it is it doesn't like the heavier polyester threads, Buy one second hand, use and sell on again and you end up hiring one for not much money.

Materials can easily be sourced from Kayospruce or Point North, but aren't cheap.
