DIY Pirate Self Defence!

I have been pondering the canon idea. I think the primary shot, at good range, could be a cricket ball. Minimal risk of causing a fatality and it justifies you padding up. Also, careful consideration could go into the powder combination. A breach loading canon firing shotgun blanks would be ideal and various chemicals could be added to the cartridge for effect, smoke, flashes, colour etc. The idea is to give the impression the canon is significantly larger and more dangerous than reality. The second shot can be grapeshot with full powder for maximum chance of disabling their craft. I agree with the 20/20 comment as they may simply try to destroy you for the good of the game.

p.s. How much Kevlar do you need in the glass fibre construction of the boat to be bullet proof?

I don't think any sensible amount would do it because the hull's rigid. It's the flexibility of the bulletproof vest that does it. IIRC, In WW2, they used something remarkably like plasticine to armour armed merchantmen. It was lighter and more effective than steel.

Fuel Air Bomb

Surprised no one has suggested a petrol or diesel powered jetwash with a reservoir of petrol. I tried that once. Pretty amazing range .....

Now we are talking, this is the sort of thing that would maim, kill and debilitate at close range with wide area coverage. One could convert a fire extinguisher loaded with fuel, special nozzle and igniter system for practical direct intervention. Extend this further, pressurised pipe around gunwale, with spray nozzles, pressurised fuel in an accumulator; quick circle around attackers with spray activated and then ignition, death by conflagration. The potato gun could now be converted to lob crude air fuel bombs with mini timers for wide area destruction.

As the pirate boat approaches start launching fuel air bombs across their line of approach, if they get through that, charge up the gunwale fuel lines and attempt to circle them while spraying fuel vapour , head upwind and ignite, if they survive that and take chase, use the flammable fire extinguisher for close combat targeted incineration. What can go wrong, simples!

Hoist a fire proof spinnaker just before detonating of your fuel air bomb and accelerate away from danger, even better, attack and rapid retreat capability.

I think we are all looking at the solution in the wrong way. What we need is submerging capability:

Pirate starts approaching, watchman sounds klaxon, closes companionway hatch and sets the hydroplanes to 30 degrees down... :0)

The only person to get hurt would be the pirate foolhardy enough to use a line to secure their boat to yours.

A man after my own heart

When car hi jacking got popular with the low likes people started to fit flame throwers under the driver/passengers doors activated by a foot button on the car floor. Unfortunately it was banned.

Prob is of course that we live in a regulated world, we even are scared of carrying a fecking knife for gods sake! So the chances of carrying around bits and pieces on our boat which would excite plod, is nil!
However if some thought was given to the stuff we carry around as normal, such as outboard fuel, would any of us have the ball s to wait until the fckers were alongside, then lob plastic bags full,of petrol on them, closely followed by a burning something!
The satisfying WHUMPFF! would either finish them off OR invite the wasps nest syndrome!
My SWMBO is a tiger, me with the petrol bomb and I could guarantee she would follow up with some more well aimed molotov cocktails!

When I were a lad and being trained to fly jets at Her Majesty's expense (thanks awfully Ma'am) we used to construct THE LAGER CANNON in the corridor of the Occifers Mess.

Two lager cans taped together as a barrell, lighter fuel and a snug fitting tennis ball. When the bleddy thing actually worked, a most impressive shot with a tennis ball in flames going all of.... ooooh...20 yards!, although we did scare the life out of Smelly Wilson as he emerged from his room and a fireball went past his eyebrows!

Happy days!
