Had a quote for a custom mattress for my aft cabin, just over £800 !

So i ordered a pocket spring mattress with a memory foam topper from Mattressman, £160.

I needed to modify one corner at the foot of the bed, when the hull curves. I used the old foam mattress to mark what needed to be altered, then out with the sewing kit and unpick the top seam

Trim the memory foam back.

Trim the other layers and you can see the pocket springs, i've snipped the tops off of a few pockets here.

Next, remove the springs and the redundant pockets. The outer springs were held by wire rings to a strip of steel around the edge of the mattress.

The steel strip around the edge is trimmed, it's likely there to keep the edge in shape, but i don't think it will be missed in this application. As the springs were removed diagonally across the rows the edge is a little uneven, so i cut some strips of the left over material from the top of the mattress to even things up.

Pin the top to the side panel.

Stitch the top to the side panel, using a sail needle and some sail thread.

I decided to stitch the top to the side, then replace the edge trim separately, it was too fiddly trying to hold it all together at once, plus the double stitching will be stronger.

Turn it over and repeat the above stitching for the bottom edge.

Final picture, the finished article. Certainly beats the foam mattress i've been sleeping on :)

lovely Job and very practical , as my bones are getting to that age I may do this too very nice, although I hope you wont mind if I refuse your stitching if I cut myself open :D

Superb effort.

I spent some time on a large boat with proper mattresses, a joyous experience. It must be one of the most useful upgrades you could make.

You'd be pleased of my stitching if we were 50 miles offshore and you were bleeding to death :)

So would I, but remember my forward cabin kingsize has 4 radius corners. I'd loose all strength unless I could reinstate the edging bars on the mattress but that'd involve welding I think which is too much agro.

Looks good though. Just make sure you've not left any pins in it!!

Can't imagine anyone reading this thread will be impressed. I'd rather put my money to better use.

Not found any pins yet :disgust:

Not many sail boats where you could get a Kingsize mattress down the companionway. My forward cabin mattress is too big, has to be in two parts.

Not sure how much strength needs to be where the metal was removed, seems pretty solid without it.

My queen size mattress in my aft cabin was made in 3 sections so I could get in through the aft cabin door.

Mine is foam from a local mattress manufacturer. I added a memory foam full size topper that I could roll up and get in.

That is a nice job.

My mattress is a double with a full curve at both ends, do you think your method could work for such a shape ?

Do you have a website for the supplier you used please ?

Thanks.

I would think it would work OK for your double. The curve on mine was from about half way along one long side. At the head end of the bed it's a little wider than a single, but not as wide as a double, so i'm going to have a small infill made up from just foam. Seemed silly to buy a double and waste almost half of it. You might just need to consider if the metal edging would be needed to help keep its shape, mine seems fine without it but it would be simple enough to add something if you though it needed it.

I ordered it from here ; https://www.mattressman.co.uk/
