DIY air cooled outboard

You want a thai long tail with a VW engine

I have a Yam 3.5 air cooled, traded it for some extra work on a small project. Listed as 1980, it goes after a couple of pulls on last years fuel, has a water cooled leg from a tube that faces the prop. Has a neutral and forward gear. Great for what I need, and will not fail from corrosion. So a little noisy, but in truth, not a lot more than a friend's 3.5 Tot.

Oh, on the DIY bit, I have a 10hp Tecumsah verical shaft engine mated to a Suzuki leg. It is of to one side with a layshaft and toothed belts to convert the RPM of the engine to the leg. F-N-R on the leg. Only a mock up at the moment, as the boat it is destined for is 'delayed'... While a smaller cruiser is on the stocks.

I converted a small petrol strimmer to an outboard. It works, though the first propeller in the video broke, and the current one isn't the most efficient.

Even easier. Get yourself a Seagull - the impellor is so crude it doesnt touch the side of the housing and the engine can be run dry for a decent time.

This Russian job is designed around a Honda GXV50 unit same basic engine as 1000w Honda portable generator so it is probably the quietest sorry it is all in Russian but the video gives you an idea of how quiet it is , the engine is 2hp and weighs 6 kilos dry and uses 1 litre/hr not a lot of power but would go better with a prop.http://www.motocontinent.ru/lodochnyj-motor-honda-kalmar/
That is a cracking find, i have never seen a jet drive. I have my reservations about the plastic impeller housing and the size of the intake grate. If you suck up a stone its going to make short work of plastic housings. I am going to try to make contact with them to see if i can buy a leg complete and build one. I build these with a Yamaha/ Mariner 2hp leg. Lovely and light and if you use the original silencer you have the advantage of nearly 3hp and quiet running....... Il get my anorak!!!!!
