This last season was a bit of a duffer for me. Oh, I fixed the boat a lot, and pootled about which was all quite good. But I hardly went very far, really. Soo, next year, I am wondering about having a massive trip to the uk and back. Is this a totally rubbish idea? I do a bit of boating in the uk, mainly solent. Is May and June okay? I can't remember. Also, is it all hideously rolling waves if you are not in the solent? I can't remeber this either. I might easily get it all out of my system by going towards Gibraltar a bit, and that's enuf. Or praps to Seville. What a ditherer I am...

Soo, next year, I am wondering about having a massive trip to Bridlington and back. Is this a totally rubbish idea? I do a bit of boating in Yorkshire, mainly south. Is May and June okay? I can't remember. Also, is it all hideously rolling waves if you are not in the Humber? I can't remeber this either. I might easily get it all out of my system by going towards Spurn a bit, and that's enuf. Or praps to Cleethorpes. What a ditherer I am...

Are you mad? What are you doing your boating in the Med for, if not to get away from the hideous weather (this year will prove to be a total aberration) and the freezing cold water (believe me, spray in your face is a lot worse when its 12deg as opposed to 28deg)
Actually, from my own experience, I cant say I've come across bigger waves in the E Channel than in the Med and at least there's usually some kind of forecast to rely on, unlike the Med. Biscay, however, may be a different kettle of poissons
One problem you will have is where to park your boat especially in Brittanny where all the pontoons are designed for 12' dinghies
I would'nt bother with the UK. Why not head for Greece or Croatia?

Better watch it. Forum rules prohibit the posting of:

Kim will rap your knuckles, for sure.

I think, like me, you have forgotten what boating is like in the UK. In May last year we were swimming (albeit briskly) in the Med and enjoying the outdoor life.
Suggest taking off down the Italian coast, Bay of Naples, Sicily perhaps. I've heard Morocco is good.
UK not!

Right Sorted

Go to Turkey for Christmas

Apart from the obvious Santa Claus comes from there

Next year get a proper boat and it won't matter where you sail

Is it true H1 has run off with the PoW?

Re: Git!

That about sums it up.

Having said that if Santatech delivers what me and LJS have asked for (see the Milltech thread). I'm going to have a Fleming 55 on Windermere next year - do you think it will stand out a bit.

Seriously though wouldn't it be better to consider such a voyage over the season rather than one intensive cruise. You could do it in a series of hops and do a bit of leisurly cruising along the way. Then you are here to enjoy (!) the south coast for nthe following season.

If you need crew for the short hops should be no shortage of volunteers from here. I can picture you, me and Martin Whiteley sipping Pimms on the sundeck doing a passable impression of Monty Pythons 4 Yorkshiremen

Well, I think you should do it. Why should you be basking in the sunshine on your boat when the rest of us are experiencing British "Summer" in all its awesome majesty?

Also I think there should be another Newtown Creek outing, so that I can come to it and we can all evaluate your boat handling skills. Getting a 23 metre boat into the harbour should be a doddle, though you might want to wait for an hour or two after low water...........

May is invariably crap (and wasn't brilliant even this year, if I recall correctly), June often so. This summer has been an aberration, but if you wait about 15 years, we'll have another one like it.

Hope this helps,

)

Take the Leopard up the Grand Canal?

"Take the Leopard up the Grand Canal" is not a euphormism but a suggestion. Although "Carry on up the Grand Canal" could be quite a good title for a crappy Brit comedy!

Imagine cruising around the coast of Italy, could stop in Sardina, Capri, Naples (to see the ruins), Scicilly to see Tao Mina. Then cross over and cruise back up the Dalmatian coast stopping in Dubrovnik, Split, then head back over to Itae side and cruise into Venice up the Grand Canal and moore out side the Doges Palace!!

Seriously though, I wonder if you can take a boat into the lagoon at Venice? Does anyone know if you'd need special permission.?

Re: Take the Leopard up the Grand Canal?

I've often wondered about that myself as there is a marina opposite St Marks near the lighthouse thingy and another one behind the football stadium and you do see apparently private boats moored outside houses
Perhaps tcm could tout for some water taxi business. Cant be any more of a rip-off than the locals

Re: Take the Leopard up the Grand Canal?

I tried taking a Cranchi up the Grand Canal a few years back and got told to f*ck off in no uncertain terms by carabinieri in a boat. You have to leave your boat in the marina and do the rest in a vaparetto.

forgive me i f i am wrong
i thought the point about motorboats was that yes you can go theoretically hundres of miles in a day but really it is better to go the same distance as the yachts but have a very long lunch and lots of swims and still beat them to the best spot in the marina whilst they arrive 1 hour after the pub shuts

i thought generally you would not want to do about no more than five hours motoring a day otherwise it all becomes a bit tedious and bone rattly(this is my personal experience) obviously a 23m boat can soak up the big miles more easily than say 40 foot MB but certainly helming/ watch keeping for more than that must become a bit tiresome with a small family crew

would it not be better to do monster tour of the med up and down coast of italy etc?
i can imagine that whilst trip to UK would be an adventure you would probably find the trip back a pain in the backside if after 2 weeks you decide you have made a dreadful mistake. the wife and kids would soon get bored with wet picnics in newton creek.

or is this just a blatant desire to do huge circles round chartered sunseekers shouting and pointing /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: ah, the crew.

For UK wear, male crew will wear a business suit, female crew will wear black gloss catsuits and the appropriate Matrix sunglasses. The wooftahs on the Sunseekers will crap themselves.

words of encouragement

This is a totally excellent idea. Suggest careful organised blast to Solent, do it in a week or so, with pro crew drawn from this very forum driving thru the night on watches and suchlike. Each crew can pay a fare of a tank of fuel, except Phil Cool who should be invited on at a discount in return for massive YM certificate handout at the end. Get cheap fule in Gib. Solent parking of 23m will be easy, and you will have fabulous fun there, first ever Leopard in Solent. Rental of Antibes park space will yield 8k Euros, so covering the Solent parking dues. If you need a week in 'tibes I can lend yer a boat (sooming we buy it....anuvver story) provided you promise not to slosh too much petrol about. Bit infra dig but yerl cope. Then in September sling D2 on a ship as deck cargo and take her back. Best bit of all will be calling Bart/Muriel on mobile saying "anchor is busted, can you come to help like b4?", they will say "where are you" and you can say "Newtown Creek"

Re: slight alternative

1. Nip down to Gibraltar and get D2 on as deck cargo there to So'ton. Cos my portugal mate Cap'n Northney reckons bit wavy and headwinds at Easter, much better in May.

2. Lurk around Uk till july

3. Go back to Gib, with crew as per your idea.

4. Think about leaving it in Gib over next winter, maybe.

Re: slight alternative

Excellent. All sorted then. Farbeit from me to assign tasks, but leaving it in Gib or thereabouts would be quite handy as SunCoast might look in onnit now and again.

Also, on the drive south in July August I sometimes find there can be difficulties with the 24v feeds, not usually to important kit, just one of the reading lights, the blue leds in the passerelle, oh and the hour meters.

Do you need a shipping cradle? I have some channel section and welding rods and looking for something to do wivvem?
