Can anyone advise what my fuel consumption is likely to be if I take my Sealine S37 with KAD 42's down the canals to the Med. I am at present half way up the Seine to Paris and thinking of another British summer or something different. Someone out there must have done it - I just dont fancy the idea of carrying cans etc. We normally burn about 10 gallons per hour at 26 knots, but I have no idea what we're likely to use at 5 knots in a ditch !

You will probably be on tickover so whatever the minimum is on the fuel curve. I'd guesstimate 2l per hour per engine or less. Depends on your tickover and so forth. Trailing alternate engines every hour will drop the fuel consumption and probably make little difference to speed, to single engine wqill work a bit harder and may do a better bit of charging.

Around a gallon an hour per engine at 1500 rpm?

I have a graph ( Excel ) I made for a twin KAD43 boat I can PM you.

If its any help at all on my 33ft boat with a somewhat less less powerful engines {AQD40A},my records show that on my last upper Thames trip at around 5 knots or so the engines were using around 1.5 gallons an hour in total ,even if you added in your extra weight and power would have thought that 2 gallons an hour could be achieved without any problem.

Thanks for your replies - the point is there are not that many places to refuel - and when you do get there, as I did today half way up the Seine and they had run out, your screwed. I thought that maybe someone must have an idea. The concept that the canals have ample refueling points is flawed. We're not on the Solent now, and my back does not relish the thought of lugging umpteen gerry cans from the local supermarche. I do think a gallon an hour is not far out - thanks for that. On that basis, I think we'll go for it - just have to get to grips with the thought of a week or so at less than 26 knots !! Many thanks !

no offence ment woff!! just a day or so crusing at tickover speed and you will soon have an idea anyway .....hope you have a good trip!!!

Wofff, keep us posted too. This is a trip I would like to do when I retire. I believe the locks are big and filthy. So let us know how far you get and dont forget to post some photo's.
