Please take the time to answer a short questionnaire for my university dissertation research on Code of nautical Conduct by leisure users. All results will be kept anonymous and used for dissertation findings. Would be a tremendous help if you could spare 5 minutes of your time.

Will, I suggest you give a bit more info into why and where, and how the survey is going to be used. folk will be more inclined to participate if they understand why, and how the data is to be used.

Sorry OP, your survey contains some very silly questions.

Maybe you could talk to some boaty people and have another go. I would help but I've broke me pc and I hate typing on a phone.

Very silly questions? It is trying to create a argument around weather the Maritime Coastguard Agency’s Nautical Code is enough to govern UK waterways. Any Further suggestions would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't worry too much Will, it's usual to get a hard time from forumites when putting out a questionnaire. :)
I've completed it - you are going for some very broard open questions that might prove difficult in terms of engagement and the survey does feel a little like you've already formed a view and are trying to form a consensus.

Good luck with things and have a good look around the forum for historic conversations on the subject, it's an evocative subject and one that is so polarised that you might have difficulty cutting through the noise :) for me I veer toward a preference for broad laws, common sense and self regulation but I kind of think that a license / Boat MOT wouldn't be too bad a thing. The number one FAQ from my non boats friends when they see our boat is 'what kind of license do you need to drive it?', they are always surprised when they find out!

Not many of us are involved within the marine leisure industry, are you looking for professionals or simple pleasure boaters? I stopped there (Q2) as I assumed you were looking for people in the industry.

Will, apologies if I came across a bit arsy. Running your questions past some folks with a boating background might help you phrase them better and perhaps reduce confusion.

Will:
I've completed the questionanaire and wish you well, but:

1. Some of the questions were badly phrased. They might mean something to you, but you need to read them as an outsider, or get someone else to read and critique them

2. I've been boating 40+ years and have never heard of "Maritime Coastguard Agency’s Nautical Code" or "Maritime Coastguard Agency’s Nautical Code of Conduct 1972". Put either of these two phrases into google and you get nothing on the first 2 pages. If I've missed this document, please post a link to it. At a guess, because of the 1972 date, you might I think be referring to a document/set of rules known widely as International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, or just "ColRegs". No yachtsman ever refers to ColRegs using the phrases you used. I only made this guess afterwards, so I answered "not at all" to Q11. I think others will have done or will do the same, so I'm afraid your results are going to be adrift

Why not pull this thread, re-work the questionnaire, then re-post on here and you'll get some decent answers?

If you are referring to ColRegs, then there is much wrong with them in my view at least. There are many threads on here about that, which you can search for

What are you talking about? Is it an inland waterways thing? Are you talking about coded vessels? IRPCS? SOLAS V? Some particular MCA MGN. Would be helpful if you put up a link to it on their website.

It's research for a university dissertation... Unless it is an amazing piece of research, revered by his lecturers and peers, it will almost certainly never see the light of day, other than a few friends, and one or more lecturers. I've filled it in with no concerns. I didnt feel led in any direction, although some of the questions were a little difficult to answer. It seems to be absolutely anonymous, so I am happy that none of my answers can be related to me.

It does blather on about "waterways" a lot, so I'm not sure whether it's aimed at real boats or ditchcrawlers.

I have no idea what the questions on "boat education/ competency courses" (or possibly "boat safety courses" - are these two meant to be interchangeable?) are meant to be about. RYA courses and the like, or some po-faced MCA thing I've not come across?

As JFM says, the supposed "Nautical Code" thing is a mystery.

Some of the questions forget about the context. I don't exceed the speed limit on a river because I don't sail on a river. I don't wear a kill cord because 34' sailing yachts don't have one.

The general tone of the "control and licensing" questions is somewhat offensive.

The endless spelling and grammar mistakes make you sound like a moron. This is university-level work? Christ on a bike.

Done now.

Pete

I didn't see the endless spelling and grammar mistakes. Your moron comment is uncalled for. This is not the lounge.

Exactly. I've done the same.

After some constructive comments, my first draft dissertation questionnaire is being amended for later distribution. Really appreciate your time and comments, is a invaluable part of my dissertation process.

I'm sure people on here will be happy to comment on the draft of the new questionnaire.

Also, if you need help on precisely identifying the regulations etc. feel free to ask.

I asked the Forum for input into my daughter's dissertation survey last year into offshore wind power so happy to respond to your's. Best of luck. (My daughter is now working in the renewable energy sector but on solar not wind!)

I thought, LJS, that you might also have suggested that the phrasing of the insult is sloppy as well as unpleasant. "Endless" mistakes, really, they are without end? It would also read better as "spelling and grammatical mistakes". Once you start picking someone up on spelling and especially grammar you are on a hiding to nothing, oops, I've just done the same myself :)
