I have most of a gallon of 50:1 2T petrol from last year. Since some kind soul relieved me of my faithful Tohatsu 3.5, I now have a 4 stroke Mariner 3.5. No one I know wants the 2T petrol, so I need to empty the can to put a bit of fresh, oil-free petrol in. Any suggestions for a safe, relatively pollution-free way to dispose of it? My local tip is closed for all but household rubbish, and pouring it down a drain strikes me as a bit antisocial - not to mention the possibilities of that bloke with his dog end...

I tend to tip small quantities of petrol (not diesel) onto the patch of gravel behind my workshop, to evaporate. It’s not going to run into any watercourses from there, but perhaps the evaporation into the air doesn’t meet your pollution criteria.

Not sure if it is 'green' but it makes an excellent weed killer. Weeds droop in 30 minutes. Proper weedkiller may not be 'green' either.

Use it in your car or lawn mower. As said 1/2 a gal or so per fill up is nothing.

Or if you want to be really kind see if there is a local model flying club , bound to be someone there who would be pleased to have it.

Regards Clive

I'd use it in any low tech 4T engine, if I couldn't find a 2T engine to use it in.
Or put a little at a time into a car, well diluted.
Or keep it for cleaning very greasy bits of motorbike.

TBH, around here it's never very long between hearing people using strimmers and stuff, so giving it away should not be a problem.

Does it smell funny?

My local boatyard has an oil disposal tank that you use to recycle your old engine oil after an oil change.
I’m sure if you got rid of the old oily petrol in an oil container into one of these you would be doing the Environment a favour.

Put it in the boats diesel tank? Did the same last year with some stale 2T.

Exactly ... no need to dump it at all ..... gasoline like kerosine is actually a cheap way to winterise summer diesel.

A gallon of 50-1 ? in a reasonable size tank such as I have of 70ltrs ... (15gal) ... 6% mix ?? nothing ... if worried ... then split it into two lots to add to tank ..

No wonder recycled oil is so bad !!

No need ... honestly best is to throw it into the diesel tank and 'winterise' your fuel !

My 4t lawnmower has never even blinked when fed 2t fuel oil mix, and I tend to over oil that too.. Outboard fuel lives in the car boot. (No storage at club for this) and petrol station takes too long.

Throw it into the new engines fuel tank. Do no harm, as long as the fuel hasn’t gone off.
As it happens, mercruiser recently changed their winterisation advice for their mpi 4 stroke engines to advise running 2 stroke through the fuel to act as a storage inhibitor before winter lay up.
it will be fine

This matter of fuel going off .... I do not say it does not go 'stale' - off course any product with extremely light ends in the blend as Gasoline has will lose some 'potency' .... but mixing with fresh and not just throwing it away is the solution.

The only two items that can be 'affected' by 2T fuel in a straight gasoline 4str engine are :

1. Catalytic Converter .... and you need a large amount of 2T to have marked effect
2. Oily plug as the 4str engine scrapes cylinder walls to keep all above piston ... but again it needs significant amounts of 2T.

Throwing a gallon into the average size car / boat tank and filling up is negligible.

we have used the oil disposal drum at the recycling centre (hopefully they will re-open soon!) and also the one at the boat yard in the past, its just thins the oil in the tank a bit and should be re-cycled safely them.

But why throw it away ?? There's loads of uses it can be put to without giving it to recycle boys who will then profit from it.
