Hi Folks,

Have accumulated approx. 10 out of date flares. Can anyone recommend a responsible and legal way of disposing of them in the South Suffolk/North Essex area

Many thanks

Suffolk Sailing at Claydon Business Park will take old flares in replacement of like for like new. We just updated our flares form RORC to Coded and they took them all. Great service! Was very tempted to go for the LED flares but given we are bound for France this summer cruise felt the traditional pyrotechnics suited best.

Thames Coastguard at Walton. Ring them first to check that they will have someone there to receive them and that their flare box has room. They will take up to 12 and they must be yours.

This issue needs sorting properly IMO. I have bought a PLB and not buying flares anymore.

Just for info - I know some of you will be wringing your hands and wailing 'you money grabbing bastids'

SYH chandlery will take them and get them disposed of via their flare supplier at £1 per flare (cost price to them).

Don't know whether this is for berth-holders only but is in line with what Marine Safety at Lowestoft charged me when I had my old liferaft serviced a few years back.

I'll await the incoming . . .

A pound each sounds very reasonable to dispose of out of date flares.

I've been piling the boxes up in the corner of my garage but if I was local to SYH would definitely drop them in.

I've also got a load!
I lit a couple in the back garden (not the parachute ones) - I really was taken back on how intense these things burn!
I agree..... fab for lighting bonfires!

Whilst I still have in date flares on board, I have now gone over to an Epirb and a laser flare (no need for a glitter ball on board now!! )

+1, Did this a couple of months ago with about 10 x 1996 flares found on board the new boat. Very pleasant and helpful they were too, and no charges.

However as said I would not find £1 a flare at all unreasonable.

Interesting thread, can anyone let me know which "E" flares they bought, and has anyone thought about their disposal when the time comes? Very tempted by getting rid of explosives off the boat, anything like this that reduces hazards is worthy of consideration imo.

As they are electronic equipment they will be covered by the WEEE regulations and should be returned to the manufacturer or other suitable recycling facility.
