How do I permanently deactive my old Kannad (non-GPS) EPIRB before disposing of it? There is still life in the battery and I don't wish to risk an accidental activation. Suggestions involving high explosive or road-rollers will be regarded as pleasing but impracticable!

Personally I'd open it up and disconnect the battery. But if you are already thinking in terms of road rollers, then a sledgehammer might provide a more practical alternative?

One of the occasional duties my mother had as a secretary to the Local Education Authority was disposing of old PCs which may have had confidential data on them. She was provided with a screwdriver, to remove the hard drive from the case, and a 4lb club hammer, to smash it to bits in the office car park :D

(I imagine they probably have a contract with a specialist data-destruction company in these more enlightened (and expensive) days.)
