displaying mnea gps data on pc screen

I happily run chartplotter software (I've imray , memorymap and admiralty) , driven by either a nmea-producing Garmin gps via seriel port , or by a USB Gps .

I'm about to invest in a small repeater/monitor sceen (suitably waterproofed!) in the cockpit . That'll be great for navigation prposes , but (I have to confess!) we occasionally race round the cans , guided by pre-set waypoints in the Garmin.

For the upwind legs , it would be really useful to get an on-screen / fullscreen readout of Garmin-generated data on the Velocity Made Good to Waypoint - not necessarily through running the plotter programme (we generally know where we are when racing!!) . But not being very IT literate , I cant figure out a way of pulling a full screen readout of VMG (or indeed any NMEA data - lat and long , whatever) onto my XP computer screen . Any suggestions??!!

Would be interested to know what you are looking at to do this? I am looking for something similar.

Many thanks for the links to nav-mon and polar-navy software . Both look promising at first sight . I cant see any screen grabs which are effectively solely a GPS data repeater - just big digits , say for SOG , COG and VMG ? Is that functionality in there somewhere , does anyone know?

Good question about how to source a say 8-10" lcd monitor suitable for the job . I saw one on an american chum's boat (he'd protected it and mounted under a windscreen) , but I forgot to make a note of make etc.......any suggestions?

The Holy Grail. AFAIK there isn't one thats IP65.

If you click on Dials in NavMon, you get the Lat/Long HDG/COG/SOG/STW/DEPTH/RNG/BRG/XTE/TTG?VCL.

Should be enough for anyone.....

I also use Navmonpc but have a look a Bellfield's Charplotter software. It is superb value (no autopilot output but what do you expect for £70) and having the ARCS charts, better resolution than many dedicated plotters.

I display both this and Navmon on a 17" widescreen montor mounted vertically and driven from an Acer notebook. The montor is on a swivel arm so I can either see it through the wheelhouse rear window or swing it round over the chart table.

The nmea data comes via a Shipmodul multiplexer combining depth from an old Seafarer depth/log, GPS and Wind data from a Tacktick wireless interface.
 
The biggest hurdle is the presentaion of all this useful/vital information in the cockpit where it is vulnerable to the wet conditions often encountered. With screen tchnology so advanced nowadays, surely there us an affordable option available, even if not fully IP67 (or whatever the top spec is) I could have to live with something that would need to be "bought in from the cold" after use.

I would just love a small, back-light, landscape screen say 6" x 4" that I could install up under the sprayhood on the garage and that can be detached after use and stored below. On this I could then display PC data etc.

OR maybe Fullcircle is right :-(

One day all my wishes will come true (Christ what will I do then!)

Search Amazon for Lilliput usb monitors.

They are small enough to fit inside a strong poly bag and only need a single cable to the laptop (usb powered).

I've looked at these before and the thing that put me off is that I need a little bit more than the 1m lead length.

I gather a powered USB hub won't sort it. Is that right?
