I will shortly have re-sprayed the boat's sides and will come to the new stickers of the boat's name etc.

Can anyone guide me to a norm or standard in this regard. That is; does the law require a particular minimum size or location for displaying a boat's name and/or registration number ?

Thanks
Tyrone.

In US the Coast Guard does require reg. number be displayed. However in UK & Ireland this does not apply..........yet! The custom was to display name on port side near bow & on transom with your yacht club name. If your boat is registered then name must be displayed with port of registery on transom and name on port side near stem. However there maybe some local harbour authorities that have their own rules.

Interesting. Well actually i'm neither in the US, nor UK nor Ireland.. i'm on a little island in the mediterranen called Malta !

Local legislation seems to require the boat's name and city of registration together with the actual registration number.

There seems to be quite a variety of installations. People have name on the bow, stern, transom.. everywhere !!

So was just wondering if there was a standard i could adhere too!

Thanks for your help

There is a minimum size for the SSR number, which is surprisingly small!
I think it is even smaller than the numbers used on a motor cycle number plate, and should go on the transom, but that is a minimum so there is nothing to say that it can't be big and bold.

As for the name, as big and bold as you like, where best suits.

This looks like a good question for the RYA. If they don't know who will ????

I would rather be sailing, it beats working.

The SSR number should be 28/30mm high and displayed in a prominent position on the boat. Just fitted on mine and it's on the coach roof port & starboard, just above the windows. Need only be displayed once. Other place is on the stern.

<font color=blue>Certain authorities demand that the letters are to a set size relative to the size of boat. The Environment Agency have a set scale laid down. If the Maltese Maritime Authority do not have a set scale, why not see what the E.A. one is and use that as a guideline.
