Looking at Jimi's post brought a contrary thought to mind. Having just had to rebuild the aft heads, post fitting of holding tank and much complicated plumbing, I've had all the tools spread out round the saloon for weeks.

In an idle moment, my mind wandered to thinking what is the most useless item to carry on a boat. Looking at the array of tools, two immediately sprang to mind. a spirit level and a set square.

Any other ideas?

No no no. When you come alongside a quay to dry out you need to know the depth all round the boat and not just under the sounder. And if your depth sounder goes on the blink? I had a Stowe which never worked despite being sent back to them for checking. It would show say 6 mettes depth and in the clear water I could see that it clearly was no more than 2 or 3. The worst type of failure.

As usual you turn it upside down

But I hope that you agree about the bucket of water (on an absolutely calm day and the boat being absolutely level in the x and z planes)
