Discount on list price

You are right; now I m not expressing myself well.
"I got £20k off" gives two answers.

Yes of course it does. But that wasn't what was said, this was.

blimey, I m not going to argue about the meanining of English language.. I suggested he didnt articulate his meaning very well.. and he agreed. Not much point in banging on about it
(And then I went on to manage my own sloppy post !)

unless Cannes and Southampton turn out to be huge sellers, which I doubt it...
the 20-40% discount on new builds will continue, this range as someone pointed out depends the model and how popular it is

Totally agree that the market will remain tough for some time and it surprises me that some manufacturers are not willing to do deals YET!! One other thing though bear in mind that after deflation comes inflation. Which will mean raw materials to make boats will go up and whatever the market builders may be forced to increase prices. Its all about timiing. To buy now may well be too soon

That is exactly what we have decided. Deals we are being offered are a long way from good enough so we are going to try our bigger boat plans with rubber duck to see if it works out. If it does then we will look again later, if not just keep RD until she falls to bits. Hopefully that wont be for a while :-)

Depending very much how SBS goes will, I suspect, impact greatly on how flexible dealers become. It's the last big push before another long winter...

mmmmm perhaps the VAT change to 17.5% in Jan might "persuade" a few personal buyers, (rather than commercial/coded buyers) to buy at SIBS................As Excel will be too late -last chance to save 2.5% as it were.

Yup, there'll be a few nervous dealers eager to shift 2009 stock before the market hibernates for the winter

Well given that some have been actively advertising deals of over 30% (weren't Cranchi offering up to 35% earlier in the year?) what sort of deal were you expecting? Buy one get one free?

I am the wrong guy to probably speak but since I am in Cannes and won't be at SIBS maybe I 'll not get shot ! :-)

Depending on what you are looking at not every dealer/builder is fire selling their product.

Think about it, why sell your production or what limited stock is around now that the fire sales are all but over and the Euro Buyers have snapped up the bargins for less than it has cost you to build or stock. Those that are, are in the manure and probably won't be round for long, do you really want a boat from a bankrupt dealer/builder?. You can't keep selling at 30% discount and survive, something has to give as we have seen.

Simple numbers really, yes everyone is hungry for business but a year down the line from when this financial situation kicked off and anything worth having is gone or is back at a level where there is at least some margin left.

If you left it till now thinking you were going to buy a quality boat at half price you have left it too late I am afraid.

My view anyway and not dissimilar to others.

I do agree on what u say Nautical
but to be fair enough I think builders have a margin of discount more then ever, as they inflated the prices a way too much in the recent years
why did an Azimut 55 costed about 700.000 EUROS in 2001 and the new 58 costs like 1.3 million EUROS
here I am just quoting Azimut as an example, as all other major builders have had similar increases
yes builders and dealers can afford 30% dicount and that is why they give them, I am sure if 50% of production is sold at Cannes and Southampton we will see less of these, but u still can have them any time and year, especially if a model is still not sold
Fairline have also reduced the price of there new 44 Targa Open, yes with smaller stern D4 300hp engines and gas cooker, but u still get a 4kw genset thrown in there plus stern drive joystick in it there, now it starts from 290.000 UK£ ex VAY add another 10k I think and u get the hardtop version
I think to remember when launched in 2007 the 44 Targa GT with IPS500 costed like over 400UK£....

Fair comment PY, but then also look at the nett profit some of the builders were making 24 months ago, in some cases only 4% and the best 7%, if you start wholesale discounting 30% (dont forget the dealer has to get at least another 10% on top) into your second season those figures will just be shot to pieces and very quickly you are in a major loss situation, bear also in mind some of the major builders were subject of MBO's and slashing prices just to move product will go down like a lead balloon and some unhappy investors. Far better to scale down production and sell at a reasonable margin.

I would love to see some one come back from Cannes or SIBS with a written quote from a major builder with a guaranteed 30% discount off a new build ! I seriously don't think that is going to happen and if it does I would be worried why? .

You are quite right about the used boat market, with all the foreigners buying up the good stock. Maybe I have left it too late and the new buld bargains have gone...... I honestly dont know. My financial advisor , who incidently also does work for a large poole based manufacturer has given predictions that the motor boat industry will see a small recovery and then a tail off with no recovery for some time. His advise is waite and see. Hey ho who knows but someone will be right as there are so many different views

actually one renowned British company is the one giving the better deals to us here in Europe, and this is on new to order boats
apart this us EUROS get a further 25% discount compated to 12/15 months ago due to exchange rate, so that makes it like a very big discout
