Discolouration of wood on combing

Hi, Due to the varnish peeling completely away on small sections of my boats combing I have stripped all the varnish away to re-varnish from afresh but there are light and dark patches on the wood due to direct exposure of the sun.
Is the best way to restore the natural colour to these patches to lightly sand the wood? Or is there a better way??
Just wanted to know if anyone could advise me, not sure of the type of wood but it could be elm or ash.

i think you should bleach the wood to a uniform colour, and i wd use a dilute oxalic acid brusg on roughly and rinsed off within minutes, then prepare (sand) ready for varnishing.

Yep I agree with TCM, however if it is really bad and you need to stain try Burgess Hydrosol it gives a good colour and protects the wood??

Just to add to TCM, bleach the dark bits! Oxalic is brilliant stuff!

Can I use the same approach to remove the dark patches on my spuce/pine mast and bumpkin the next time they are revarnished?
