After saying goodbye to all yesterday morning I spent the afternoon in The Beaulie river in brilliant sunshine had some lunch ,came back over at 5.00pm .on crossing the main channel at Cowshott heard a massive thump and loss of power on port engine. Got myself out of the channel and checked shaft inside, appeared to be ok but no drive, looks like Ive hit something and snapped the shaft.$*&!)%^&$£&*.

Re: Beers found!

I remember putting some beers somewhere safe on your boat. They seemed to wedge in tightly either side of a metal thingie by the engine, I thought. If they are damaged, on account of poor seamanship/excessive revving etc, can you make sure you replace them in time for the next visit, so I'm not out of pocket?

;-) hope all's not horrifically expensive to fix.

Apparently Ive got no pins on these shafts, and when i select forward gear the shaft is turning and theres no water disturbence at the stern at all, if if id lost 3 blades there would be something, plus a lot of vibration, ill find out today. And aparently the prop cant just come off as in forward gear its being pushed on to the shaft different in reverse of couse.

sorry to hear that Ian - and after all your efforts on the catering ffront etc were such a success.

After last years breakdown in the middle of Poole bay on the way home this year was a breeze......which is just as well as I don't think I was up to much in the way of fixing ....

Hope it's not too many pennies - too much time

You may possibly have lost the prop completely. Had this once on a P52, lock tabs on cone nut not bent over correctly, it came off then the prop .

Check that the engine mountings are not broken. I had a similar thing happen on a Princess 435. The engine mounting bolts corroded (without me noticing)and finally failed in mid Channel causing the engine to fall off it's mountings and snap the universal joint between the gearbox and shaft. When I checked the other engine, 3 out of 4 mounting bolts were sheared also and that engine was being held in place by one bolt only

Eek you've lost the whole prop. Locktabs not done properly perhaps. On inward turning props the port prop nut (which has a right-hand thread) relies on the locktabs more. At least one new prop is loads cheaper than a new shaft etc........or could you retrace your position well enuf to get a diver to retrieve it? I guess not, needle in haystack?

Re: the curse of mrs tcm

The fault will probably be due to mrs tcm having been on board the boat the previous day, so you had better send her the invoice. She is normally very reasonable about this so i will expain to her (again) that, as usual, the boat from which she has just alighted from has busted, and it's entirely her fault.

hope not too awful :-(

Sh*t!, not the ending to a great weekend that anyone would want!

Hope it's not too painful to repair, whatever the cause

Nah, can't be the shaft, should imagine yours is probably 1.75" or more, virtually impossible to snap!! Either the flexible coupling which is most likely, or you've lost yer prop.

Before lifting her out I presume you've checked the coupling? If it is that it's an easy job and even better no lift out required.

RichardP had some problems on the way back to Brighton too. He had an engine go on him. We went into Sparkes, left his boat there and everyone came back on Tommy. It looks like a turbo problem.

why is it cars nowadays seem to run forever, but boats, that seem to enjoy much more TLC, seem to break down at the first opportunity.
Is it the invasiveness of saltwater or just simple crap mechanical, tech and build quality.
Just a question, but I never get in the car expecting it to break down but always expect it on the water.
