Dirty air

Jealous guys?

Ask a sensible sailing question and the thread gets hijacked by the hirsutely envious AKA baldy bastids

Sailing answer as requested:-

Usually if your downwind of a Clyde Puffer (Para Handy), PS Kingswear Castle or any vessel registered in the Indian sub-continent.

Have you checked for vacillations in yer laminar flow recently ?

Precisely why I asked, cos when to leeward or astern , dirty air is reasonably obvious. However is it possible to get dirty air from the leeward boat when windward boat on a beat?

That is the principle of the "lee bow tack" If you get it just right you are throwing dirty air back into your competitors sails and he is forced to tack away or find himself falling back when he will be fully in your dirt.

Get it wrong however and one of two bad things will happen, either he will roll over you to windward and you will wish you had ducked astern, or worse you will have tacked in his water and you will have to do turns or be protested out.
