Does anyone know what actually happened. While not disputing the needs for lifejackets in Dinghys from my reading of the MCA report it was a fibreglass tender and the hole in the Starboard side was the main cause of this sad incident. Did the tender hit something in Langstone Harbour?

I understand the dinghy was holed - since there are only a few rocks close to shore it may have hit a buoy?!

It's true in this instance may not have ultimately saved life but in general probably would and would certaily reduce rescue/recovery costs of casualties.

Just because you have a law or local by-law? it doesn't mean you have to police it... it just concentrates the mind a little.

If you knew me you would know that I take a very responsible attitude to safety, beacause as you say its my responsibility as a skipper.

Its Interference from government that I object to this just encourages acceptance of minimum satandards as layed down,.A good example is that due to "harmonizing "of European regs a lifejacket can contain less buoyancy than was required by the old British standard.

I dont know the statistics but have allways felt that lifejackets should be worn in dinghys .Inexperienced people seem to have real difficulty stepping down into a dinghy from a yacht. I have a "float coat" which is a waterproof jacket with a buoyancy aid built in which is ok for trips to the pub etc but bulky and hot to wear or carry on a hot summers day.No easy answer to what to do with lifejackets when your ashore.

I suppose if you had some buoyancy aids for the tender you could lock them to the dinghy with an old stainless shroud passed through the arm holes and a padlock. This is how I secure our dinghy when we have to leave it .

Here's one.

Left sailing club in Porthmadog, merry but not drunk. Had to pull dinghy (inflatable) up onto pontoon to relaunch at other end as it was at the front of about 20 others and it seemed easier to do that that try to squeeze it through the pile of boats.

I walking backwards and SWMBO at the bow walking it down the pontoon, I step backwards and feel fresh air, things would have been fine but SWMBO is still walking forwards. Splosh! Luckily it was a warm summers evening and I could stand up, low water; Unluckily as it always happens, we had a massive audience.
