Dinghy mounting on Swim platform - Chocks...?

We regularly make similar fittings for various UK boatbuilders so if you are stuck drop me a line with a hand sketch or better, and I can give you some ideas.

I've lost track of where you got to Roger in your quest for a chock solution. I'll post pics of the odds n sods of s/s fittings I have (after next weekend) and if you need any of them posting to you (in a durex, or whatever you want) I'll be happy to

You need in this application to have the tapped hole made blind, so water cannot get thru the hole to what lies beneath

I must admit, I have lost track too. This has gone on for some weeks now. (since Southampton boatshow) The boat is going through a pretty extensive re-fit at Essex at the moment and I hope to see her in the next few weeks. Some of the items have taken longer than expected too. The main improvement delay is the replacement of all the teak due to sun damage and neglect. As a result, I'm not keen to start drilling big holes in it. :ambivalence:
I still like the 'Dinghease' / 'Hurley' idea but I also have the backup of a passerelle for lifting. The dinghy and engine are small enough to hinge over the swim deck and I've come to the conclusion that it may be best to wait until boat and dinghy are present.

Whichever way I do it, I will want to be able to remove the chocks or davits when the dinghy is either deployed or removed though. I hope that makes sense. If you are able to post a piccy or two of the 'Top hat' and threaded mounting, it could be very helpful too. I noted your point about selecting the hole cutter first before having them made... Thanks, very simple but so easy to get that one wrong.:o

I''ll keep you posted on progress too. I'm just starting to feel enthusiastic about a 'new to me' boat again as I've not changed for nearly 6 years now! :encouragement:

Thanks JFM and John

I emailed Princess yesterday and Peter Harwood thinks he might have the same ones that were previously fitted so I think I will explore that route first.

Actually, JFM, I'm hoping that the existing sockets will be good centres and that just some new chocks made to fit the old holes.
The existing chocks with their pins were made to fit the F/B and the bathing platform so it would be nise to have everything interchangeable.

Thanks for your help - I'll be back if I draw a blank at Princess.

Just received a little parcel from Princess
Success - they have found EXACTLY the same ones that were originally fitted.

So, yet another example of great support from PMYS (Princess Motor Yacht Sales) in Swanwick.
Just one of many little things that have made our ownership of a Princess an absolute joy.

JW is moving into her sixth season.
We try to keep her in tip-top condition so support from the dealer is really helpful.
And I'm confident that they will help ensure that next season will be as trouble free as all the previous ones.

Would you be able to post a picture of what Princess have sent you please, I am looking into having some chocks made and want to fit them onto the bathing platform the same way you have so would like to see what yours look like before you fit them (I hope you haven't fitted them just yet) so I can get an idea of what I need to get made by a stainless company

I'll post pics of the odds n sods of s/s fittings I have

John

did you get a picture of the odds and sods you have ?? if so I would be gratefull of a picture or two so I can see what you mean regards your mounts, I am going to have some chocks made the way you had them done on your Phantom 42 only I am still a little unsure in my head of exactly what you mean hence the request for some pictures as pictures speak a thousand words so they say :D

Thanks Shawn

The ones Princess sent me do seem to have been made up and not a stock item.
Great for me because these are identical to the original ones fitted and will match well.

I haven't fitted them yet so when I next get the camera out, I will pop up some pics and dimensions etc.

One other question I have is the chocks you had on your phantom 42 in the picture below, were these fitted with the pegs on the bottom of the chocks dropping into the holes in the discs on the bathing platform so they could just be lifted out the way when the tender was launched, if so then I presume nothing holds the chocks in place but the tender when its tied down with the securing straps??? am I correct in thinking this????

If so did the chocks try and tip up at all when you got the 1st part of the tender on the chocks where they hang over the transom slightly as there is nothing holding them in place at that point. I ask this as I have visions of me trying to launch the tender off the same design as you had and at the critical moment when the tender is just about to slip off the chocks with all the weight of the tender right on the tip of the chocks the chocks tipping up and falling in the sea, sorry if this sounds stupid but I am just trying to get my head around it all

Cheers Shawn

Shawn on my Phantom 42 we had a Valiant 2.8m RIB and 5hp outboard and we just lifted/dragged the thing from water straight onto the chocks with the engine always attached not removed. Easy peasy. The chocks had a sliding "ramp" part to their profile, at the aft end, which was very helpful because it allowed us to drag the dinghy up the ramp and into the V of the chocks, without bashing the mothership's gelcoat. See pics. This is what I would do on a 40 footer

I've just thought about your question to JFM
Actually, we did have a problem with the chocks "sticking" to the bottom of the dinghy - and then dropping off when you least wanted it.
In our case, it became quite dangerous for anyone on the bathing platform when we were lifting the dinghy from the flybridge.
Also it could be possible to drop the chocks into the water whe we were storing the dinghy on the bathing platform.

The solution was to make up some tethers with simple clips attached to nearby fixings/cleats etc.
And then be careful when lifting.

Just an observation - but the problem wouldn't make me change the design.

Hi Mike,
I'm still in the same frame, nothing fixed yet, but some piccies and dimensions would be helpful. Some of the locating hardware that I've seen in the past has had a 'Keyhole' type slot to prevent chocs pulling out. I thought yours were like this but would appear not.

Roger/Shawn
Sorry to be slow replying. Yes, chocks which drop in just on pegs do not work imho on hi-los (because the chocks float out) or when you have a "launching ramp" profile on the aft part of the chock like on those pics of my old phantom 42. They do work perfectly well if a crane or passerelle lifts the tender onto the chocks, as on MapisM's boat above and Hurricane's flybridge. I therefore use keyhole shaped sockets in the deck, and mushroom headed pegs on bottom of one end of chocks, and thumb screw at t'other end. I'll try to grab some pics this weekend and post them, together with dimensioned drawings that I have somewhere

Yes, Roger you are correct
There are some keyhole fittings on JW's bathing platform but I've never used them.
Instead, the "hole and peg" system works for us.

JFM
I do have some fittings that connect to the keyholes but in order for them to stay in place, there is a foam gasket.
This makes it quite tricky to locate them.
I think that the simplicity of the hole and peg idea is best.
But, I agree, would be absolutely no use on a HiLo platform.

I'll post some pics of my fittings

Here you go Roger. Luvuly jubbly...

Now you're talking.

But I don't think my 'hostess' would make use of the pole!:nonchalance:

I was really only hoping to see some pics of the deck mountings, when you get a chance.

I'm still waiting to take delivery of my boat (maybe 2 weeks) so chocks have been put on the rear burner. I've asked EBY not to refit the old chocks on the new teak tho'. I'd prefer them to be detachable for when the dinghy is in or out of use.

Thanks.

OK will do. Been mad busy and I need to drop my tender into the water to get the photo, erk! Next weekend if it's sunny!

Yep, not surprising with the show and all. As said earlier, rush is off and I still don't know whether I'm going to crane or slide on/off.
Thanks tho' I'll be interested to see how you've located TT Match.

I took these pics on the princess stand at the show and contacted the stainless people JFM suggested and they quoted me £45 plus vat each for them made in a circular shape to match a hole saw of the correct size

Jeeze those screws are awful. What corner cutting. Generally, I don't love those Princess things with their mix of squares and curves and I'll try to post pics of mine next week

Shawn, be very careful about how you make these. If they go onto a swim platform (as mine do) there is no waterproofing to think about. A flat plate will do. But if they go onto a platform which has hull under it, like yours I think, then you have to have a stainless steel box welded on the back to create the waterproofing

John I have been wondering about this issue as I don't know what depth I will have I think I will be ok regards the starboard one as I think this will fit over the locker in the platform so it will drain ok into that and out again see below pic, but the port side one is the one I am worried about regards waterproofing/drainage
