Dinghy mounting on Swim platform - Chocks...?

Sorry to be so late onto the thread, been away for the kid's half term.
We do a very similar solution to the Hurley, made here in the UK, from aluminium and polyurethane, with skateboard type wheels, easily removes from platform when not needed, in custom sizes if required.

hi roger i ask about upright as our entrance is central to the bathing platform so cant use davits

If not it will work if you have the height, otherwise I think you'll haveto use 'snap davits' and let the boat out on a line when on a berth. I hope you follow my drift there.

If not look at 'lanerboy's post in the thread about 'choice of dinghy', his is on snap davits currently on a Phantom 40. He has a side door but access can be limited if the dinghy is in the cruising position, especially if it is on tie bars and not lashed or strapped.

Oh, and as you can see, it's not just a matter of drilling holes through the transom: you can finish the job with some steel plates, which don't look ugly when the chocks are not in place.

I know many folks around here have a different view, but mine is that if mother nature makes teak grey after a while, who am I to argue? :)

I've just spent a couple of hours looking for some S/S fittings like those in the above pic.

That's just like the system that we already have fitted
We move the wooden blocks from the F/B to the bathing platform when we want the dinghy on the bathing platform.

The fittings that I've got are definitely not "one off bespoke" fittings
I'm sure that they are purpose made for something.

Looking to run a Jet Ski as well as the dinghy so I would like to get hold of some more of these S/S fittings and make up some more blocks

Anybody know where I can get hold of some?

Sorry, no idea. Those in the pics were custom made by my yard.
Actually they are pretty simple, and I suppose they didn't even bother looking for some catalogue items because they are used to handle s/steel jobs.
You might well be correct assuming that similar stuff could be already available somewhere, though.

I haven't got a pic of the chock end but this is the deck fitting

I know that this next one looks the same but, in fact, it has a thread in the hole where I screw a S/S eye
The eye then provides a "tie down" for the dinghy

I have tried googling for "eye bolts" hoping that whoever supplied/made the screw fitting might also do the other fittings.

Does anyone know where I would get these?

I expect you've asked Princess already - I've just had a couple of SS spigots made up (so I can fit new K&N Filters to my TAMD63's), any good SS workshop should be able to match them for you.

They do look very similar to the ones I have fitted on my bathing platform, I wonder if Nick from Seabridge might be able to help source them?
 
The UMT ones are hideous. The bosunsupplies ones have a huge radius on the shoulder so they can't be flush mounted, and cost $180. You're better off just getting a stainless fabricator to make them nicely. That's the way I've always done it

One tip, if you plan to flush fit them rather than surface mount them, is to buy your holesaw first and get the things made so they sit nicely in the hole that your holesaw makes. Don't have them made to any old size then go looking for a holesaw!

If you want a good UK fabricator who works by email to pdf drawings and posts the work to you, then I can recommend www.mrstainless.co.uk, but you may have a perfectly good s/s fabricator near you already

A jetski Mike - sheesh!

PS, Hurricane, I think I have 4 of these things spare. Two have an untapped 10mm hole and two have M10 tapped hole. Each is 50mm dia x 6mm thick for flush mounting into the teak, or maybe they are 8mm thick so they sit 2mm proud deliberately. Each has a s/s "cup" welded under the hole so they are waterproof with respect to whatever is below the teak. Each has I think 2 c'sunk screw holes not three, so not a perfect match for JW. I don't recall the details fully as they are on the boat and I'm there wkend after this one, so I'll take a look then if you're not in a hurry. If I have them you are welcome to them FOC - I can jiffy bag them to you

I emailed Princess yesterday and Peter Harwood thinks he might have the same ones that were previously fitted so I think I will explore that route first.

Actually, JFM, I'm hoping that the existing sockets will be good centres and that just some new chocks made to fit the old holes.
The existing chocks with their pins were made to fit the F/B and the bathing platform so it would be nise to have everything interchangeable.

I've lost track of where you got to Roger in your quest for a chock solution. I'll post pics of the odds n sods of s/s fittings I have (after next weekend) and if you need any of them posting to you (in a durex, or whatever you want) I'll be happy to

As I see it, the Seabridge ones are no good (though, nice website/product listings they have there) in this application because they are not water proof. You need in this application to have the tapped hole made blind, so water cannot get thru the hole to what lies beneath
