A Friend of mine has a satellite radio, the aerial/dish is a black cube about 100mm on a side. he gets about 25 radio stations. I know this works well in the area around South Africa, but does anyone know if these work in a greater area. I don't want to ask the co. that supplies them as they'll say it works everywhere.

I am guessing that it was Worldspace radio.

I have used this over most of the Med, particulary Turkey and Greece. I think the set cost me abut £60.

They do seem to be in some financial difficulty, I notice the indian service is bankrupt. They dont have Radio 4 though :-(

I have been trying to get hold of one of these for years. I have mailed worldspace a couple of times but they only refer me back to the website. They are evidently providing a service that was free when I last checked, but they won't sign up any new customers. If you already hold a set that's fine, but you can't buy one!

If anyone knows different, or will sell me a used set, I'm very interested.

Thats a great shame, looking at the web I suspect they wont be around for much longer anyway. I will dig mine out in the next day or two and see if it still works.

JGTech who are usually very good and knowledgable are advertising one on their site

No mention of subscriptions but it might be worth giving them a call

I got my worldspace from Nevada Radio about 8 years ago. - www.nevadaradio.co.uk and search for worldspace. They appear to be out of stock at the moment but it might be worth giving them a call.

The radio has been brilliant using it in the Middle East and N Africa. It will eat batteries if you don't use it on the mains. The BBC world service and other similar services are free progs but the entertainment is by subscription. I don't pay any longer but they still appear to be on-air.

Worldspace have been in financial difficulties for some time and could vanish at any time. They also have some suspect financial dealings in their past. I don't see them surviving for much longer. They have never made a proffit as far as I can see. I wouldn't spend a lot of money for a radio at the moment.

Special Announcement for India Subscribers to WorldSpace Satellite Radio

On December 31, 2009, the WorldSpace satellite radio broadcast service will be terminated for all customers serviced from India.

This action is an outgrowth of the financial difficulties facing WorldSpace India’s parent company, WorldSpace, Inc., which has been under bankruptcy protection since October 2008. The potential buyer of much of WorldSpace’s global assets has decided not to buy the WorldSpace assets relating to and supporting WorldSpace’s subscription business in India. As a consequence, WorldSpace, Inc. must discontinue its subscriber business in India. Your subscription contract is with WorldSpace, Inc., a US company that is in a bankruptcy proceeding in the United States. The company recognizes that you may have paid for services to be rendered beyond the termination date, but is not in a position to offer a refund for any unused portion of your subscription.

You may have a potential remedy under the U.S. bankruptcy law. You may file a claim under the claims procedure that is intended to protect creditors of the bankrupt company. Sometime early next year, a claim servicing company will send notice to all creditors listed by the company. In order to ensure that you receive timely notice, we would request that you send the following information by mail or email to Rakesh Raghavan at WorldSpace, Inc. headquarters in the United States.

1. Name
2. Address
3. Email
4. Subscription Account Number
5. Date of Subscription
6. Length of Subscription
7. Amount paid for your current subscription

Send this information to: By email -- CustomerServiceUS@worldspace.com or by regular mail – Rakesh Raghavan, WorldSpace, Inc. 8515 Georgia AV, Silver Spring, MD 20910 USA.

Our sincere apologies for this circumstance.

I used my Toshiba WorldSpace radio for 5 years in the Med. It sounds like it is the same as the OP described. It was great. WorldSpace reduced their Med coverage to repurpose their satellite for terrestrial use but I understand the ME and Africa beams are still active.
My boat is now back in Australia so I have no signal here. If you are interested in my Toshiba send me a PM. Unfortunately the postage/freight may make it an expensive process. I will be in Singapore later in February so posting it from half way may help.

We subscribed when we were cruising and felt we had good value. The ME beam is usable as you get into the Aegean and furthe East.
