I am looking at buying a digital camcorder and need some advice. I dont want to spend more than around £550 (excl VAT) but want a nice light compact unit with as many pixels as I can get also has to have DV in/out memory card slot, fire wire pull out lcd screen and around 8 or 10x optical zoom.

Any recommendations please.

Try for 20 optical. My Panasonic had that before it got knicked. Dont be fooled by Digital zoom, not worth a wank. My new canon is quite crap after the Panasonic. Canon all judery, the Panasonic was superb.

reviewed in the latest copy of digital camcorder mag voted best buy but sound and image quality scoring was down compared to others and it only has a b/w view finder.

£449 RRP

When you decide what you want check Amazon's website - they do some good deals on cameras. Also try this site. I got a good deal from them on a new camera.

Dom, fairly obvious question, but what do you want to do with it. Point and shoot holiday stuff, or video editing etc etc? You can get extremely good point and shoot without a lot of additional facilities. If you want manual focus, white balance etc, you can make a balance.

Buy with actual use in mind

the wife wants to use it to film the kids and I would like to use it to film boaty type stuff or just things in general. Just want good quality which is quick and easy to edit via pc but not too technical or hard to use.

As you are based in Guernsey I presume that ex VAT means that as you won't be paying this iniquitous burden.

yes based in Guernsy so no VAT although I wil buy off th web as we have this nasty thing called freight although I do get around that most of the time with my own products I sell.
