I'm looking at getting the iAIS from Digital Yacht and wondered how well it interfaces to OpenCPN. My plan is to connect the iAIS to my NMEA so that it can pick up the GPS and other data and then I'd like to use the wifi feed for laptop or if that doesn't work the USB option.

Does anyone have any experience on these systems they'd be willing to share?

Many thanks in advance,

Simon

PS I already have Navionics on my iPad and iPhone and I'm really fed up that I will probably have to invest in iNavX as well :(

I don't have the digital yacht iais but I have done a bit of research in this area. OpenCPN should work with with it, but unless they've updated the firmware since I last looked at the capabilities (which they might have done) the network side could only accept one TCP client at a time: Not so useful if you want to connect your ipad and laptop over wifi at the same time.

According to this...:

..you can set it up to do UDP broadcast instead which would allow multiple clients to use the data. Not as sensible as multicast but imho a heck of a lot more sensible than using TCP for this type of data.

I have a Belfield dongle, straight forward & simple via open cpn

Thanks, very helpful.

Digital Yacht is very helpful on the phone. Just give them a call. Also, their software is updated quite frequently, so things change.

Thanks, for that advice. I talked to them today and they were great. They may even be getting some extra business as I'm looking at AIS transponder following the chat.

For anyone else reading they confirmed that openCPN with read the wifi direct for all the boat's NMEA data if its connected and no need to to use the USB. He also confirmed that the wifi is indeed UDP and that iNavX can read it at the same time.

Looks like I need to raid the piggy bank when the Great Wise One isn't paying attention :)
