I am in the process of trying to decide what boat to buy once i have sold my house. Sail or Power. The next boat i buy is to live aboard most of the year, one around 30ft but do not fancy the idea of burning up three four gallons of diesel an hour at 82p litre.

A lot of people have told me to stick to a sailing craft as the price of diesel is to raise level with petrol, or more the case cheap red is to be banned. Is this true? and if so will it de-value the diesel motor boats from thousands down to hundreds.

diesel is the fuel of choice due to reduced fire hazard and so should hold value longer than like boat with gas motor. diesel can also run cabin heater and use same tank.

If you are intending serious live aboard, then the decision you have to make is how far will you be travelling per year. From that you can work our whether in is financially viable to have a mobo or it needs to be a raggie.

However, for equivalent cash to a 30ft mobo that is suitable for liveaboard, you can get a larger raggie.

The next exam question is the amount of space you want onboard. A mobo with conventional engines and shafts loses a lot of internal space for the engines. A raggie can have quite reasonable space, but the best option for space is a catamaran. Their main dis-advantage is that some marinas charge extra for them. However, the sort of marina that is happy for liveaboard probably wont do that. (in any case a 30ft cat has the living accomodation of a 40+ft raggie)

We have been cruising for half of 2004, slowly sailing from Holland to SW France. From memory we have filled the tank once all season, about 15 gallons. Stick to sailing, not just for the economy but for the satisfaction, quiet, fresh air and enormous pleasure of 'harnessing nature'.
