I had a Racor seperator on my Volvo 2020 which I found invaluable. Are you still allowed to purchase them as I had heard that you cannot due to the glass bowl/safety issues ?

Am still using a filter with glass inspection bowl as primary diesel filter.
Simply purchase new filter canister and refit existing glass bowl.
Non Racal.
Which reminds me both need changing.

You can use the glass/clear plastic bowls. If you intend to go on the inland waterways and need a BSS then the inspector will not allow a glass bowl unless it is ritted with the Racor metal heat shield and metal drain cock, which can be retro-fitted.

Wow 92 + quid for a metal bowel/heat shield 2 pipe plugs a 2 washers that is way over priced even by marine standards.
Yes, that is why I have made my own heatshield and will only have to buy a metal draincock and plug. The stainless steel dish was bought in the supermarket for £2 just needing a 20mm hole in it. According to one website I found, one of these will fit, if you can find a UK source. Powermate 1/4 in. NPT Tank Drain Valve-072-0006RP - The Home Depot has anyone tried this?

I have a pair of filter in the engine compartment with glass bowls, by the time it gets hot enough in there to shatter the bowls i shall have long since abandoned ship.

Still available, I think they are not allowed in petrol engined boats, diesel boats ok.
My recollection is glass bowl not permitted on inland waterways. Otherwise not prohibited but general practice appears to be metal.

Unless there is a concern with less than clean fuel supplies, a glassl bowl is not a positive. 22 years on my boat with a metal bowl and no sign of contaminants at each end of season inspection - was I just lucky?

The BSS for inland waterways does not say glass bowls are not permitted. It says:-

The Racor filters with a glass bowl and fitted with the metal heat shield and metal drain cock/plug are recognised as being suitably fire resistant. The standard glass version without the heat shield is permitted if it is not mounted in the engine space.

Strange that they worry about heat, the only one that I have known to break was because the water in it froze and let the tank of diesel empty into the bilge.

I seem to remember on the genuine bit there is a small hole in the bottom section, to ensure no diesel spills trap there . perhaps that explains the gouging price.

My primary fuel filter uses a Separ 20-530 , costing a staggering £20 a go! The secondary filter is much bigger yet a Champion filter (296 equivalent) costs a mere £5. Baffled by the price difference o_O

I have a S WK2000/5 and while the filters are a tad expensive I would never go back to a CAV set up.

My VP 2002 secondary filters are about £15 a pop, so as long as everything works it is a lot less hassle than a fuel problem.

Everybody and their dog makes CAV296 replacement racors are more rare so supply and demand?

My Chinese Racor 500 copy has a nice chunky plastic bowl. Can’t see the harm in that. As @PaulRainbow said, if it’s hot enough to melt there’s a bigger problem.

Yep, dodgy prices. I wash mine out with paraffin and re-use them.

Many times!
