HI, i'm having two diesel tanks made for my MFV which are 2x1000 litres with baffles.
The fabricator has mentioned that they may have to be double skinned (larger tank around the inner tank in case of rupture).
Does anyone know about legislation or regulations concerning diesel tanks and whether I have to have a 'double thickness' pair of tanks?
Many thanks, Neil.

I have no knowledge of rules and regs for this sort of installation, but the logic is the single skin tank must be fit for purpose and withstand the typical g forces in being installed in your craft. If it is installed within your hull, away form corrosive elments then it is inside a second skin the hull.

I would have thought double skinning is for land based tanks to protect the environment. Where corrosion may thin a single skin over time and allow fuel to weep out and protect against accidental penetration.

I'm pretty sure he is off the mark here.

Maybe he has got oil TANKERS in his mind instead of oil TANKS

Maybe (perish the thought) he wants to give you a big bill.

I suggest you contact your local MCA. They will give you chapter & verse.

Thank you both for those replies.
He is a friend of mine who is a fantastic engineer and welder but has listened to someone who suggested that I check this out first.
Out of all the 'maybe's' you list, the most probable is that maybe the person who suggested it, is talking utter crap as usual.
Many thanks for replying so quickly and i appreciate your views.
I'll just have two standard tanks made, single skinned and the worst that can happen is that one corrodes/bursts and I lose diesel straight into the bilge (very unlikely)
Neil.

The regulation for 'double skinning' applies to tankers. I can't remember what the size limit is, but I don't think the regulation was supposed to apply to yacht tanks! Anyway, if you are having a tank made that fits inside your boat it IS double skinned. The yacht hull is one skin and the tank is the other!

Have you contact details for your tank builder as I need 2 new tanks. I have looked in to this recently and they do not need to be doubled skinned.

Is he getting mixd. up?some Dutch steel cruisers used the bathing platform as fuel tanks( an excellent idea) as it leaves loads of space in the hull.Due to new EU regs they are not allowed to do this anymore in case of a rear collision.

He's wrong, you do not need yopur diesel tanks double skinned. Do you get double skinned tanks from vetus or any other supplier? No.
