Replaced diesel tank inspection hatch gasket last year with new one from tek tanks. Today as part of pre season commisioning lifted hatch and gasket has rotted ,it is in pieces and is slimey, it looks that the diesel has dissolved the rubber, anyone got any ideas what's happened. Can I use any Hermetite products to make a gasket, if so which one. Tank is plastic Tek Tanks.
Thanks
Keith

Subject: Hylomar: Mastic for Diesel Tank?

I have a requirement for a mastic to seal a steel flange onto the inside a plastic diesel fuel tank. The purpose is to prevent leaks, and to prevent the flange from falling into the tank when the outer flange is removed. Can you suggest a suitable product? If so, please advise UK stockists.

Thank you for your enquiry. Our Technical Department have recommended Hylosil Instant Gasket for this application, this product should be available for the following stockists in the UK;

Buck & Hickman
FPS
Unipart Automotive

The above companies have branches throughout the UK, if you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to ask.

Hylomar Ltd

Speak to TekTank and ask them to send you a new gasket. The fixing of the hatch is with self tappers and you need to take care to tighten up but not to overtighten or you risk stripping the screw purchase. My Tektank (installed by previous owner) weeped diesel from new whenever the boat heeled . I got a replacement gasket FOC from TekTank and bedded it with 'Hylomar Blue' Not had a problem since.

I have had new inspection hatches fitted to my stainless steel fuel tank, said to be the business for fuels. The gaskets supplied are made from cork sheet. I guess that if cork works with whiskey,port, wine etc , it should work with diesel??

If your "plastic" tank is moulded-to-hull-shape polyethylene as fitted to most modern production boats, NOTHING will stick to it for long, especially in contact with diesel. It sounds as though you are trying to stick a backing plate/washer to the inside, to let you tighten down an outer access plate.

Had similar issues myself. To date best gasket material seems to be cork/nitrile gasket sheet, this is not just cork but a cork/rubber mix. Used with Hylotyte Red, seems to work OK to seal, but not to stick. Had a similar experience with a supposedly diesel-proof plain black nitrile rubber gasket failing and disintegrating/going slimy, as described by Cagey.

In the past it was possible to buy sheet gasket material suitable for fuels from automotive factors. I have not bought any for years but I imagine they still stock it in this form. As said above it is cork bonded with nitrile rubber.

Agree with the cork gasket, although I'd probably go a bit thicker than the 1mm in alahol2's link. Probably go for the 2mm from the same place.
