Nylon-reinforced PVC hose with a red thread marker is sold as fuel hose, but it has a very limited life. Solid nylon hydraulic hose is much better but I've never seen it in chandlers. An automotive factor may keep it, some diesel cars use it for LP fuel supply.

if by 'external reader' you mean a sight guage then have a look in RS as they do the real thing with protective sleave and sealed fittings that don't require access to the inside of a tank, though they are even better if you can get inside....and the cost is very reasonable and will make the final job look the part......

How kind!

How kind of you! Err.... but I'm not exactly a youngster. In fact I have known of "Radio Spares" for many years but it never occured to me that "that" RS might do a diesel fuel sight gauge. I too would very much like to locate a "proper" sight gauge to replace the bit of clear plastic hose I have at the moment.

That reminds me of the early 50's at my Gran's, tearing news paper into squares and threading them on a bit of string.

Was news paper softer then ????????????????

Ive just changed mine after 10 yrs finally could not read it. I use ordinary pvc clear hose with a split copper pipe around it for protection not up to BSS standard I know but it works well and is not a problem unless I have a fire in the locker which is unlikely.

My fuel tank has the 'hydraulic/pneumatic' nylon hose as a sight gauge, the only difficulty is that it is opaque and in my installation, difficult to see the level. The tank is stuck behind the engine though, and I have to use a torch. If the tube is new and in an easy to see place it should be OK, my friends boat has the same sytem but his tank is in the cockpit locker and is easily seen, and is fitted diagonally whereas mine is vertical. For suppliers see Pneumatic suppliers, I believe there is a clearer version now.

I'd rather be sailing... :)
