My friend has a Nanni 2cyl diesel in his 28' contessa and had problems last weekend - details as follows:-
Engine about 12yrs old with 2500 hours - normally starts fine and revs to 2500 max.
This w/e started OK but would not rev above 1800rpm initially, but after several minutes motoring the revs gradually increased to 2500. There was grey/white exhaust visible but not dense black clouds of exhaust.

I have suggested the following in order of likelyhood:-
1) Dirty fuel/blocked fuel filters/bugs in fuel
2) Injectors need servicing(appear to be original)
3) Carboned up exhaust elbow
4) Fuel pump needs overhauling

Any one else any further ideas to cure this problem? We intend to have a go this weekend.

My first choice would be your No.1. I have seen the symptoms you describe in boats, vans and trucks, always because of clogged filters. The problem may be more likely in boats because of the increased likelihood of diesel bugs. This often seems to follow sailing in boisterous conditions, when the tank contents receive a good shake-up.

If you are sure its fuel related stick in some Soltron to help nos 1 & 3 and with continued use will help keep no. 2 in good condition. Soltron breaks down the bugs and allows them to pass thru the filters and they get burnt and passed out the exhaust.

Alan Priddy went 20,000 + miles without having to change a fuel filter by using it.

I am boating again ;-)
