Sonarbell posted a point in a thread further down re "why don't they make diesel outboards?" Never thought about this before but now it's got me thinking.

Anyone any ideas (apart from you'd need about seventy on the back of Matts Leopard of course)

Somebody did/does, 5-10 yrs ag. It was huge and heavy as you'd expect. If I recall it was a 2-stroke (diesels come in 2 and 4 stroke BTW, and as a complete aside the massive 2-strokes in huge cargo ships are virtually the most efficient prime movers made by man, 90% thermal efficiency, matched only by high altitude jet engines).

Wiv an outboard (except on those huge American boats) you want good pwr to weight ratio so petrol best?

The new 4 strokes are the way to go. Got a Merc one recently and it's fantastic, idles like a sewing machine and very quiet

There is still a diesel outboard available, but I can't remember the manufacturer(maybe Tohatsu) but its 27hp !!! The water taxi in Alderney was using one on its RIB last year

Yamaha make a diesel outboard, also a parafin one, but I've only seen them in Africa. I did also see One in Holland.

As Usual Colin yer about 50 years behind the times.
Yep the water taxi in Alderney has one so I would have thought every body else that wants one has one too!! Exept Colin who's
still on steam!!

Years ago an Italian firm called Garniti made them , they may be out there somewhere.

Yanmar make Diesel outboards. Their current range consists of 2 x 27hp models and 2 x 36hp models.
