diesel outboards....!?

They really are great but, really the domain of commercial operators to be cost effective, they were around in numbers even in the 1980s I used to see quite a few on fish farms in Norway, Chile, Laos and even in UK, but they were running nearly all day, most days.
 
Looked into getting a 27HP Yanmar Diesel Outboard until I realised the cost - about £9k some years ago,about 4x the cost of a good petrol outboard of similar size. Then it occurred to me that having such an unusual engine sourcing parts would be difficult. The fuel consumption cost difference would have taken about 30 years to break even on the higher engine cost.
Got a Tohatsu 20HP with PT, very quiet & economical and never regretted not going down the diesel OB route.
